My little brother just got 3 mollie fish. He has them in 2.5 gallon tank. He had done no prior research or had any experience (I don’t agree with him but I still want to give the fish the best life possible). So these are my main questions below but anything would be appreciated.

Is there a certain type of stones/pebbles he should use for the bottom of the tank?

How big does the tank need to be?

Can they live in odd numbers?

What is the best food for them?

Can they have plants in there tank if so what type?

I can only answer a little bit of these, as only my dad has fish. Some care *may* be wrong, though like LBD said, you should go to a fish forum :)

Anyways, he uses the shrimp rocks and they look like little circular balls. Not sure about odd numbers as same with food as we just feed them the tropical one. (Doesn’t have mollies so we don’t know if tropical is right)
And we have moss balls

Not necessarily. Anything will work.

How big does the tank need to be?
The bare minimum is 20g with more being preferred. They prefer taller tanks so a 29g would be ideal. Honestly I can’t even imagine how 3 mollies can reasonably fit in a 2.5g tank!

Can they live in odd numbers?
Not super experienced with mollies but I’m pretty sure they can.

What is the best food for them?
Any sort of high-quality tropical fish pellet will do. Omega One and Hikari are popular brands you can find at most pet stores. Flakes are also fine.

Can they have plants in there tank if so what type?
Pretty much anything that will work with your tank’s temp and tech level. For beginners, anubias, java ferns, and java moss are popular.

I definitely second the Fishlore recommendation; here’s a link! https://www.fishlore.com/Profiles-Mollies.htm They also have a forum!

Anubias coffeefolia and Java ferns - attached to wood or rocks using rubber band or sewing thread.
Hornwort, Brazilian pennywort, wisteria, anacharis and water sprite - all can be floated or can be put into substrate even sand and grow without the addition of ferts or co2)
Marino moss balls
Java moss and Christmas moss

My personal favorite plants to use in a low tech setup.

Mollies can multiply. Like guppies. Iirc they can even crossbreed with guppies as swordtails can with platties.

I had a 29 gallon brackish setup with 1 puffer and 3 black mollies. I was considering transferring them into a 55 gallon brackish and adding bumblebee gobies but I didn’t. I needed the 55 as a grow out for discus. Plus I’m not convinced that giant black mollies will not see the gobies as food. It might be one of those setups that is fine to dream about but in reality not possible? Like Finding Nemo!
