So one of my friends wants a cat. She asked me this question: can a cat be kept in one room if they have unlimited access to a big garden?

She said it would be a medium sized room with a litter box, cat stuff, maybe a cat tree, and hideouts. She also said there would be a cat-flap which leads into her large, secured garden. She is concerned that foxes/badgers would attack as there are some in her garden (at night). She is also worried if it’s illegal for the cat to kill rabbits or birds (she has some in her garden), if it decides to.

Anyways, what do you think should I tell her as the answer?

I don't see any reason the cat couldn't live there, if she's concerned about the cat at night, she should lock her in at night and only let her out during the day. As long as she gives the cat attention and doesn't just lock it in a room alone all day, the cat should be fine. It's not much different than a studio apartment and people keep cats in there.

As far as the legal question, I doubt it, though I don't know where you or she is, so it could vary depending on the local laws.

Sounds great! I would just have her lock her in the room at night like Kikya said, and that isn’t illegal :)

I am really sorry for saying this, but I feel like if the cat were to be roamed in the garden and there are bird and rabbits etc. then I would observe the cat or smth. I know its just the laws of nature, but it really shocks you when you find your pet (my dog) come home with a dead baby bird in her mouth. To be honest I don't really see it as a problem to do that as long as like, your friend makes sure that the cat doesn't really eat anything. This is just a warning by the way! I hope your friend get the cat!

Spoiler

Thank you all! I told her and she replied with this: "NO WAY OMG YAY! That's a good idea about keeping the cat in at night. Yeah, every once in a while I will try check on the cat when it's outside. I will also give it lots of attention when I'm not at school in that room. Tell your forum friends thanks from me. Now the only thing I have to do is get my parents to like cats lol. Oh well!"
