So I've been looking into bettas for a few weeks, not that i'd be allowed to get one ANYTIME soon, but yeah! I really love them atm. Any replies are appreciated <3

1. Is a ~4.5 gallon (maybe a little more, not sure) tank okay?

2. which are a better choice for beginners, male or female?

3. Should you use rocks in the bottom of the tank?

4. Should u use live plants or fake plants? Why?

5. Where could I get one from, besides Meijer or a pet store (don't wanna support-)

6. Are they social or solitary?

7. Any specific tips?

Thank you!!! :)

100% solitary. Experienced keepers can do female sororityes.

The min. is 2.5, and 5 is recomended so 4.5 is good.

Eh, either imo

idk

Only use silk plants if there fake

You can adopt or go to an ethical breeder. While buying is saving a life, your also harming others by supporting mills.

Uhhhh............. Dont be like LBD and give it bad care and only learn after it dies.

1. Is a ~4.5 gallon (maybe a little more, not sure) tank okay?

min 2.5 gal, recommended 5 gal or more so yea

2. which are a better choice for beginners, male or female?

from my experience males are a lot smarter. if you choose to house them with other fish NOT OTHER BETTAS THOUGH females have less of a fighting/mating drive

3. Should you use rocks in the bottom of the tank?

ye aquiarium gravel or those glass stone things. i've hearn\d sand isnt good tho i've never used it since it might go up the filter.

4. Should u use live plants or fake plants? Why?

fake r easier

5. Where could I get one from, besides Meijer or a pet store (don't wanna support-)\

nowhere

6. Are they social or solitary?

never house them with other bettas.  males will not get along with male guppies of similar size. if you want to add other fish, it's best for a female. get small fish for the tank mates. i've found ember tetras are best. best alone though to make sure no fight

7. Any specific tips?

buy a betta leaf for it to sleep on

in the wild they live in shallow, still water. only keep the pump filter on for max 12 hours at a timme

they do best with high protien diet- dried brine shrimp, etc

set up tank 1 week before, have the filter going

74-82 degrees water

Thank you!!! :)

1. Is a ~4.5 gallon (maybe a little more, not sure) tank okay? Yes, it's the right size.

2. which are a better choice for beginners, male or female?
Not too sure, I'm thinking either one.

3. Should you use rocks in the bottom of the tank?

You can use gravel or rocks.

4. Should u use live plants or fake plants? Why?
I've always used fake plants, but you can also use real ones as well. The real ones might be more difficult to manage, but they're both definitely options.

5. Where could I get one from, besides Meijer or a pet store (don't wanna support-)
I have no idea. I think the only places they sell them is at the pet store. I don't know if they sell them online, I doubt they do. Buying them from the pet stores means you will rescue them from those tiny containers they're forced to live in.

6. Are they social or solitary?
Betta fish are solitary, males are more territorial of course.

7. Any specific tips?
Not really, there have been some good tips given by other people.

Good luck with the Betta fish.

1. Is a ~4.5 gallon (maybe a little more, not sure) tank okay? The minimum is 2.5 gallons so that should be fine
2. which are a better choice for beginners, male or female? It doesn’t really matter in my opinion, my first was a female but now I have both genders (in different tanks)
3. Should you use rocks in the bottom of the tank? I personally use gravel (rocks) but sand is also acceptable.

4. Should u use live plants or fake plants? Why? Plastic plants are bad as they’re sharp but silk/silicone plants work.
5. Where could I get one from, besides Meijer or a pet store (don't wanna support-) Not sure, sorry.
6. Are they social or solitary? They’re solitary
7. Any specific tips? Do a fishless cycle. It really helps the fish and can help long-term. It typically takes about a month to cycle the tank (if you’re using a 4.5 gallon). The water temp should be about 78-82 degrees F.
Thank you!!! :)

So I've been looking into bettas for a few weeks, not that i'd be allowed to get one ANYTIME soon, but yeah! I really love them atm. Any replies are appreciated <3

1. Is a ~4.5 gallon (maybe a little more, not sure) tank okay? Definitely!

2. which are a better choice for beginners, male or female? Both are fine. Males tend to be a bit more colorful so that's what most people are drawn towards but female bettas have extremely similar care so either works.

3. Should you use rocks in the bottom of the tank? It's not required but I recommend it. Just be sure to gravel vac frequently so waste doesn't get clogged up down there. Sand is also a good alternative.

4. Should u use live plants or fake plants? Why? Both are fine. There are some extremely beginner-friendly plants out there like java fern and anubias that you could basically throw in an aquatic dumpster and they'd be fine, but there are also plants that require a bit more dedicated care (ex proper lighting, ferts, soils, etc) if you want to get into that. As stated, if you use fake, be sure to use silk plants. Bettas have very delicate fins that can get easily scratched up if you're not careful.

5. Where could I get one from, besides Meijer or a pet store (don't wanna support-) Honestly, there's not a lot of options for "ethical fish buying". Try checking around Facebook/Craigslist for adoptable bettas (shelters typically don't take fish), then try an online store like Aqua Huna, then if all else fails try a local pet store. Avoid chain stores like the plague much like with hamsters.

6. Are they social or solitary? Females can like in sororities, but for a tank your size you'll want to keep them solitary. Males are 100% solitary and have actually been bred to be that way (hence why their other common name is the Siamese Fighting Fish).

7. Any specific tips?

-Check out Fishlore! They have tons of experienced fish keepers on there.

-Be sure to cycle your tank before getting your fish.

-Be sure to bag/drip acclimate your fish before adding them to the tank.

-To add to the cycling piece, get a liquid test kit. API is the general go-to and it's a great kit from my experience; avoid test strips as they tend to be inaccurate.

Thank you!!! :)

5 gallon is an ethical minimum for shorter tailed males. Females need 10 to 40 gals and extremely long finned males who fin nip 3 gallons.

Please contact me for more info on Bettas. Very misunderstood creatures
