So I've been looking into bettas for a few weeks, not that i'd be allowed to get one ANYTIME soon, but yeah! I really love them atm. Any replies are appreciated <3
1. Is a ~4.5 gallon (maybe a little more, not sure) tank okay? Definitely!
2. which are a better choice for beginners, male or female? Both are fine. Males tend to be a bit more colorful so that's what most people are drawn towards but female bettas have extremely similar care so either works.
3. Should you use rocks in the bottom of the tank? It's not required but I recommend it. Just be sure to gravel vac frequently so waste doesn't get clogged up down there. Sand is also a good alternative.
4. Should u use live plants or fake plants? Why? Both are fine. There are some extremely beginner-friendly plants out there like java fern and anubias that you could basically throw in an aquatic dumpster and they'd be fine, but there are also plants that require a bit more dedicated care (ex proper lighting, ferts, soils, etc) if you want to get into that. As stated, if you use fake, be sure to use silk plants. Bettas have very delicate fins that can get easily scratched up if you're not careful.
5. Where could I get one from, besides Meijer or a pet store (don't wanna support-) Honestly, there's not a lot of options for "ethical fish buying". Try checking around Facebook/Craigslist for adoptable bettas (shelters typically don't take fish), then try an online store like Aqua Huna, then if all else fails try a local pet store. Avoid chain stores like the plague much like with hamsters.
6. Are they social or solitary? Females can like in sororities, but for a tank your size you'll want to keep them solitary. Males are 100% solitary and have actually been bred to be that way (hence why their other common name is the Siamese Fighting Fish).
7. Any specific tips?
-Check out Fishlore! They have tons of experienced fish keepers on there.
-Be sure to cycle your tank before getting your fish.
-Be sure to bag/drip acclimate your fish before adding them to the tank.
-To add to the cycling piece, get a liquid test kit. API is the general go-to and it's a great kit from my experience; avoid test strips as they tend to be inaccurate.
Thank you!!!
