Texas Rustlers Guinea Pig and Small Animal Rescue was just surrendered 75 hybrid dwarf hamsters who have already multiplied to 83.

This started with two pet store misgendered hamsters, and one owner who ended up in way over their head and did not seek help quickly enough. There are now 83.

If you are looking for a hamster any time soon and are within reason of the DFW area, please consider rescuing one of these babies. This is a massive amount for one rescue to deal with. They are a reputable 501c3 rescue (tax deductible donations), and have all the hamsters housed in bins and tanks (under minimum unfortunately and with multiple housed together still-- but thankfully everyone has been separated correctly by gender at this point in time to my knowledge), but with situations like this it would be nearly impossible to have them housed in truly ethical conditions (imagine 83 bin cages).

I've reached out at this point and I'm waiting to hear back on supplies that they need, or if they need hamster foster homes, etc. I encourage anyone who is also in the area who is able to help to do the same.

Their website is: https://www.theguineapigrescue.com/

For some reason when you click on the link it adds in "%C2%A0" -- delete that. Or just copy and paste the link directly.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention! This is a reminder that dwarf hamsters can be difficult to sex if you don't know what you are looking for. It's sadly quite common.

DFW is pretty far. I'd consider it normally, but I'm not sure I want to risk going to another state in a pandemic, especially since Texas has more lax rules right now. I followed them on IG though, so I can stay updated with the situation. It sounds like they just finished triaging. It's sad that some of them are in such poor health.

Oh that’s so devestating, I feel bad for the poor mom, imagine having all those babies

At this point, she's probably a great-grandma. I don't think she gave birth to 81 babies herself.

Shared on a few animal based discord servers I'm in! They don't have many hamster owners (focuses on reptiles) but maybe one or two members will be able to help :)

Edit: Shared it to a hamster+mouse discord server as well, I hope someone there might be able to help!

As an update to this, super special thanks to Robin & Robin's Gourmet Hamster Food for working with me on this! We have five bags of Russian Dwarf food that are going to be donated to them this evening :)

I think they still have all of them. I haven't seen them go up on petfinder yet (there are other hamsters available in DFW but they're not with Texas Rustlers). My guess is that they're probably monitoring for pregnant hamsters and more litters. They're likely a little bit overwhelmed with that many animals. I haven't received much correspondence from them and they've typically taken a day or two to get back.
