Hi! So I can get a small pet and I either would love a Syrian hamster or any type of hedgehog! I have done research on both! (more research on hamsters tho.....)

I have a 2ft x 4ft cage that would work for a Syrian or a hedgehog. The cage is a DIY cage out of melomine wood and has little platforms.

For a syrian I would put in 11 inches of bedding (aspen and paper) and I would have a large sandbath. I have an 10" wheel and food/water bowls along with hides and everything. I am MUCH more knowledgable on hamsters than hedgehogs and I have had one Winter White in the past.

For a Hedgehog I would have 1/2 the cage be fleece and the other half be a burrowing substrate. I would feed him/her high quality kitten food (1-2 tablespoons a night) along with insects and fruit a couple times a week.

I will be going to college in 4 years and hedgehogs live for 4-7 years. Syrians live for 2-3 years so I wouldn't have to worry about taking the syrian to college with me.....

So in conclusion, if I made any mistakes above feel free to correct me (but I mean....don't be mean about it....) and I am split 50/50 over a Syrian or hedgehog. So the next best thing is having online strangers decide for me!  :valentine:

Hello!

Hedgehogs actually shouldn’t have kitten food, just regular adult cat food is best since it has less fat. :) Also, what do you plan on doing regarding keeping the hedgehog warm? If college is going to be an issue, I’d recommend getting a hamster. :)

I literally was exactly the same, but then I realised the price of hedgehogs and also my parents saying no to a hedgehog. Also, do you have a vet care for a hedge hog as they are very hard to find. Also, I know spikes hedgehog food is available dry and moist in the UK but not sure I the us soz

I recommend hedgehog, but for college purposes I would definitely do syrian.  Ok well since college wouldn't be an issue I guess one vote for hedgehog lol

Good to know thanks!   :) Also, what do you plan on doing regarding keeping the hedgehog warm?  I found a heating pad on amazon that is for small animals and it can keep the cage 75-80 degrees  If college is going to be an issue, I’d recommend getting a hamster. :) It wouldn't be an issue! I just thought I'd say that lol

Im pretty sure that heating pads shouldnt be used. I dont know why..but I think I heard it somewhere.

Heat pads can be used as long as they are being used safely and correctly :)

Thanks! I think I will use a pad over a lamp because my rabbits could knock over a lamp.....

Thank you to everyone who answered! I think that I will get a Syrian because they are less costly and I wouldn't have to worry about when college comes. But idk yet....I think I will decide in a couple months because that's when my parents said I could get another pet! Thank you!

One big difference for me was cleaning up after them. Hedgehog poop is WAY messier and smellier than hamster poop.
