So one of the females ate two of the kits from the second litter (which isn't uncommon for malnurished mothers) and she stopped feeding the other two. Now I'm handfeeding them every hour. *sigh*

I emailed a local rat breeder to help me figure out their age, and apparently they are a lot older than I was told. The lady I got them from said they were almost a month old, but the breeder says they're about 5 1/2 weeks old(the breeder is ethical and experienced, and she's been breeding rats for over two decades, so I trust her opinion). I seperated the boys this morning, and now they're living in the same cage as their dad.

I'm gonna let the adopters name them

1. I take forever to pick names and when I finally decide it's kind of a wierd name. One of my rats is named McFergus for example.

2. I don't want to get too attached because it'll be hard enough to say goodbye without names

Anyone have ideas for rehoming the rats? None of the local shelters can help unless the rats are directly in their care, petfinder only lists shelter pets, local rat groups don't allow any sort of rehoming, adoptapet/rehome isn't allowing anything other than cats and dogs, and I'm avoiding Craigslist with all my might.

So far I've only found one potential home(through hh actually) but I still need more. I'm advertising through word-of-mouth, and my mom posted a cute video of one of the baby boys on her social media telling people about it, but I need more effective ideas.

Do you guys have any ideas?

I might as well try to find more potential homes on here so if you live in MTN time east of the Rockies and you're interested in rats them PM me.

Social Media (make a foster pet account called Operation Rat Rescue?)

Email shelters asking to advertise

Make a website (you can toss it afterwards)

Use Craigslist, but screen everyone carefully

Maybe ask the owner of a Rat Group for permission to advertise?

Aww I wish I lived near you </3

I know someone in my school who has rats, and I'm sure they wouldn't mind taking on more. It's unfortunate you live not here :C

(And ofc I would take the rats too but like my parents would say no)

I bit the bullet and made a craigslist ad. I'm not proud of it.

I did find another potential adopter though, he's an army vet with PTSD and wants rats to help him cope.

He definetly hasn't done nearly enough research yet(he talked about using hamsterballs and "those cages with the tubes" aka critterjails)

But he really loves animals and he wants to do everything right

And I'm willing to work with him

But there are two problems

1. he smokes(he talks a lot and I now know his entire life story lol) and rats don't do well with second-hand smoke

2. he lives 2.5 hours away and doesn't have a car(I know that sounds sketchy, but it's not. If you knew his story you'd understand)

As much as I'd love to adopt out rats to him(for his sake and theirs), I just don't know if it'll work. The 2.5 hour trip is one thing, but smoking isn't something you can quit just because you got some rodents, it's very addictive and takes years for some people to stop.

Idk, I just wish the situation was different.
