Hi all!

So my dad and brother are allergic to cats and dogs, but my brother really wants a bird in a few years time, and I’m helping him research.

Would someone with a severe cat and dog allergy be allergic to birds?

What hypoallergenic birds are there?

Thanks!

Technically there are no hypoallergenic birds, but I have issues with dogs and cats as well, and no issues to my budgies. As long as you keep up with keeping the cage clean, you should be fine.

I disagree with the above. There is one type of hypoallergenic bird not many people consider for some reason. There not very common, but they come in beautiful colors. They have a white substance on the inside, dont poop, poo, or eat, stay completely still, and will never make a sound! There called 'Stuffed Animals'.

Sorry about the bad joke

I don't think someone with dog/cat allergies would be allergic to real birds, though. I'm allergic to dogs and cats, but I've interacted with birds before and no problem :)

Most people are allergic to the dander, and birds can have dander as well. There are ways to reduce it, even for dogs and cats. Frequent baths, grooming, etc.

Thanks everyone! As I said, it’s going to be a couple years before we get birds as we already have a hamster and two rabbits, my parents think with birds too we’ll be making ourselves a zoo in our house haha. So, I’ve got plenty of time to research.

What I mean by hypoallergenic is it doesn’t spark as much of a reaction as other birds, I wasn’t expecting any bird to be completely hypoallergenic. Sorry if I didn’t make that clear. Now with this information, what species will be better for allergies?

I have budgies who are always up in my face (literally - https://ibb.co/dj7TZcf)and I have no issues whatsoever with them, as long as I keep up with their cage maintenance and cleaning. The smaller the bird, the less dander they will produce. If you want something easier, I would go with the budgies as opposed to something like a conure or African Grey. Or a cockatiel. Cockatiels are pretty cuddly, and they have a nice song. Budgies like to scream a lot.

Definitely NOT a cockatiel or cockatoo. Their feathers are covered in a fine powder that is worse for allergies.
