I’m going through my old hamster stuff and giving stuff to my friend who has a rat. I’m giving her paper bedding, and if it’s safe for rats I’ll give her my eco earth coconut fibre substrate. Is it safe for rats?

Eco earth is perfectly safe for rats, my rats love to play and dig in it.

On a different random note, maybe encourage your friend to get a second rat, rats are very social and can actually die from depression/lonlyness.

Thanks! Yup I’ve already tried convincing her. Her rat is from a rescue and she thinks that since she doesn’t know the rat’s age she can’t get a cage mate. Is this true? Or can the rats be different ages?

The rats can be different ages. What matters is compatibility, not age. :)

As a side note, Eco Earth shouldn’t use used as the main substrate as it has no odor control. It should be just for enrichment. :)
