Hi there! I’m adopting a pair of baby male rats this weekend and I have a few questions.

  1. How can I make a base for the loose bedding? I want to make one like emiolgy’s but I don’t know how.

  1. Where can I get hemp bedding in the U.S?

  1. They have been socialized a bit but will need to get more used to being handled. Any tips?

  1. What is the best etsy shot to get hammocks from?

  1. What is the best water bottle?

  1. What is the best bedding?

  1. How can I make fleece hammocks and cage liners?

  1. What are some things a new owner should know and what are some things that aren’t mentioned very much that I should know about?

  1. What is the best commercial food in the U.S.? For now we have been planning on getting oxbow before we can make homemade food.

  1. What are the best specific toys/cage accessories available?

Any tips or advice will be helpful. While I have done a ton of research I am still a new owner and don’t have experience.

1. If your using a critter nation, just use a cement mixing pan. It's a heck of a lot cheaper. I think emiology made hers with either acrylic or plexiglass. You need a special glue for acrylic, and you could use silicone or really strong tape for plexiglass. There are lots of tutorials on the internet, you'll find everything you need to know in just a couple google searchs.

2. You can find hemp bedding on amazon and other online stores, just keep in mind that it's usually marketed for horses, not small pets. I personally wouldn't reccomend hemp, it's really uncomfrotable for rats and other small mammals. Aspen and paper bedding both work well, and are miles better, as far as comfort goes. You could also use fleece, but it's really high maitenence and I wouldn't reccomend it for a beginner.

3. Free roam time is the best time to bond with your rats imo. Sit down in the play area cross-legged and cover your legs with a blanket. Sprinkle treats on the blanket. Soon, your rats will be comfortable near you and you can start the hand taming process. There are lots of different taming methods, bu this one is my favorite.

4. I make all of mine myself, so I wouldn't know.

5. If you have rats that like to chew, I'd reccomend a glass bottle. I personally don't like using water bottles larger than eight oz because it wastes so much water, you gonna be switching out the water daily, so you might as well just get small ones. You will need at least on water source per rat. For example, I have six rats, and I am currently using four bottles and three bowls. I would reccomend providing a water bowl even if it won't be for drinking. Rats really love to play with the water in their bowls, so providing one for enrichment alone is a great reason. One time I got a battery powered reptile fountain for my rats. They LOVED it! No one ever talks about it, but rats really love open water.

6. Aspen mixed with Katee Clean and Cozy has been my favorite.

7. There are LOADS of tutorials on YT.

8. Rats are destructive, they chew on baseboards if you let them. The chew on EVERYTHING! They are also very prone to illness. In my experience, an indevidual rat will go average about three vet trips in their lifespan, more if they have a tumor or something that needs to be checked regularly. A vet fund for rats should be $500 minimum.

9. Oxbow is the best imo.

10. My rats don't really like comercial rat products, so I end up making most of their accesories.

1-Plexiaglass or Home Depot cemment mixers. I believe Emiology has a tutorial on it :)

2- Um.... No idea. Paper works just as well!

3-Um... FOOD, MALT PASTE, LOVE

4- No Idea ://////-I prefer DIY :)

5-I like Plastic ones because there easier to avoid leaks with. No brand suggestions rn :)

6-I would say (non dusty) kaytee CC or Boxo/Small Pet Select, though Aspen can be used, it depends on your situation.

7-Easy! For fleece liners, just cut the fleece to size and wick it. For hammocks, um... find a tutorial online that is easier to understand than the nonsense LBD just typed then deleted.

8- Just because its on Youtube dosen't mean its okay. There aren't many Rat YT's, but understand sometimes they do things others dont agree with.

9-Mazuri (I believe you need a VERY specific one, so dont quote me on this, as some of them have too high protein), Oxbow, and I do think theres another Im forgetting- But, there is no best for ANYTHING, just preferences mostly.

10- DIY!

Sorry this wasn't much. I've been researching rat care for a while, but this wasn't very much advice. Dont forget to give me a pic!

I'm fairly certain there's only one type of Mazuri made for rats, and that's the high-protein kind we use around here. Maybe you were thinking of Harlan Teklad (also a good brand, just harder to access)?

OP: Can't comment on much else, but from my experience with mouse diets both Oxbow Adult Rat and Science Selective Rat are great!

I guess I was? I remember Mazuri being constantly thrown around as a great brand for rats, but now I honestly don't know anymore. Sorry!

1. I have the Prevue Feisty ferret cage so.... I ended up making one out of the same thing people use for guinea pig cages (cloroplast I think..? )hopefully it holds up over time.

2. I'm using aspen and paper now :)

3. I've been doing that and they are more confident now but still pretty skittish

4. I've never sewn before and have a feeling it would take a long time and they would turn out ugly so I just ordered the best looking ones I could find

5. My mom ordered 2 plastic waterbottles before I saw this but luckily they don't chew on them. They also have a bowl and they love playing in it as was as drinking from it.

6.

7.

8. Good to know....

9. I've got owbow but in the future I would like to make my own

10.

As soon as I can I'll make a post with photos of them and pm the link to you. they are soooooo cute!  :valentine:
