Hello!

Last night around 12:00 ish one of my rats started to eat a housefly. I have no idea how he managed to catch it, but he did, and then he started eating it. When I noticed him eating something, I picked him up to see what he was eating, and it was a fly. I took it away from him, it looked like he ate about half of it.

He has eaten bugs before, every now and again I like to give my rats some mealworms and sometimes crickets.

He is 1.5 years old, male rat, and he weighs about 200 grams. If you need any other information, please ask, I will be happy to answer.

So... Should I be concerned? Would it be worth taking him to the vet?

Thank you so much!

I would imagine he'll be fine, because I've eaten flies (dont ask), and so has my dog, and were boh fine (aside from some brain damage), but I don't know any side effects of eating flies. According to Google-

The only thing you have to watch out for is the dog (or cat) that snarfs a stinging insect and gets stung in the mouth, throat, or on the nose: the rare cat or dog can be allergic, but even if not, the swelling can cut off the animal's breathing.

I don't think it would be much to worry about

However I have 0 experience with rats so don't trust me.

But I would just watch to see if any of his behavior changes in the next couple days, and if not I wouldn't worry :)

Nah digestive system will kill all germs that may be on a house fly. As you say they eat insects normally so will be fine watch out for stinging insects they can sting the inside of mouths not that you can do much if that's happened anyway.
