Hello, RemyMom!

 

What made you want to be interviewed?

''I decided to be interviewed because I wanted to do something that could possibly help any potential hamster owners!'' RemyMom replied.

 

And what made you choose hamsters as a pet?

''I told my parents I really wanted to either get a cat or a hamster, but due to my mom’s bad allergies, a cat was out of the question. They agreed to get me a hamster, my first pet, and I was ecstatic!''

 

What was your first experience with a hamster, RemyMom?

'' The first time I hand-fed Remy, I was so excited, and I got to pet him the same day. He was adorable and so sweet, and the experience made me love him even more!''

 

Did you do research before getting a pet, and did you provide proper care?

''I did TONS of research before I got Remy because I wanted him to live his life the best way possible. I try my best to make sure he is always happy, and I personally think he is living his best life  :)''

 

What was the funniest thing any of your hamsters did?

''The funniest thing my hamster did was when I cut up a toilet paper rolls so they were little circles, and he was chewing on them, and then he slipped IN it, and it was just around his middle, and then he just slipped out. It was hilarious! (I was also kind of terrified it would get stuck  )''

 

What species of hamster have you had?

''Remy is my first hamster, and he is a 6 month old Syrian.''

 

How many hamsters do you have now / Or are planning to get any time soon?

''I have one hamster, and I want to continue to have them, but one at a time!''

 

What was your favorite thing to do with your hamster?

''I really just like petting him while he eats, he’s so cute!''

 

 

What do you want Pet stores to change based on Hamster care?

''I want them to start selling hamster cages/enclosures that a hamster can actually live and be happy in.''

 

 

What is the thing you hate most about bad hamster care?

'' Honestly, I don’t think anyone would intentionally harm a hamster or give it a too small cage. What I hate Is that they don’t even research a tiny bit to realize that they need to change how they care for their hamster, or how they need to provide better supplies for them. It’s terrible.''

 

 

Do you have ideas how to stop Hamster abuse?

''I think the best way is to just research, research, and research! You can find everything on how to properly care for a hamster online''

 

 

 

Do you think hamsters deserve as much love as any other pet?

''Hamsters are living, breathing animals, who have feelings and who deserve just as much love as any other animal!''

HamsterLover, What made you choose a hamster as a pet?
''I was once on my computer and I guess I just thought of how much I loved owning rodents after my previous gerbil died, so I looked into hamsters!''


What was your first experience with a hamster?
''My first experience with a hamster was my hamster Nugget, a long haired male Syrian''


Did you do any research before getting a hamster, and did you provide the proper care?
''I did quite a bit of research, but I still thought a hamster would be fine in a small cage, so I got a small cage. I then realized after my hamster monkey barring and chewing the bars that he was bored and switched him to a larger cage. If you compare what I know now to what I knew in February, I knew practically nothing back then lol.''



What was the funniest thing any of your hamsters did, HamsterLover?
''The funniest thing one of my hamsters did, was when Nugget would be minding his own business, and then when someone would walk up to the enclosure, he would go to the side of the bin and look up at us!''


What species of hamster have you had?
''I’ve had 2 Syrians, and a Campbell’s Dwarf (he was probably a hybrid)''



How many hamsters do you have now / Are you planning to get hamsters any time soon?
'' I currently don’t have any hamsters but I’m getting a robo in a few days!''


What was your favorite thing to do with your hamsters?
''My favorite thing to do with my hamsters was probably switching their toys and making new setups!''



What do you want Pet stores to change based on Hamster care?
''I would like for them to have properly sized cages, and to stop selling unsafe products such as softwood bedding, wire/mesh wheels, cotton nesting, scented bedding, etc. It would also be nice for the employees to know about the animals they are selling and what they need to be enriched and happy.''



What is the thing you hate most about bad hamster care?
''I hate when people say that “my hamster is small so they are fine in a small cage”. Just because hamsters are small, it doesn’t mean that they are not full of energy and they don’t like to explore.''

''Unfortunately, No''


Do you think hamsters deserve as much love as any other pet?
''Of course! Why wouldn’t they?!''

Today, we have daisy03 joining us today!

 

daisy03, why did you decide to be interviewed?

''I decided to be interviewed because I was intrigued what this was about and it seemed interesting.''

 

 

What made you choose a hamster as a pet?

''I've kept gerbils for many years and watching gerbil videos on Youtube naturally drew me via recommendations to Hamstertube (hamster Youtubers). I think I watched Erin's Animals a lot and thought her hamsters and her wonderful cages were pretty cool, and thought it would be nice to have a hamster one day but didn't really have any intention of doing anything about that yet. I think I was either still under 18 or just over 18 at that stage and still at the point of having to convince my parents for every new pet. I had two gerbils and they wouldn't have agreed to anything else. I didn't seriously consider getting a hamster until last year when the opportunity to adopt a Roborovski from an accidental litter arose. That opportunity ultimately passed me by, but it set off a hamster obsession which led to me adopting my own Roborovski in October.''

 

 

 

What was your first experience with a hamster?

''I had never actually handled a hamster until I got my Robo. I had seen plenty but somehow never had the chance to interact with one. The only prior experience with a hamster I remember was visiting a family friend who had a hamster in a small cage in the living room. I remember she got bitten trying to hold the hamster. So that wasn't a very good first impression.''

 

 

 Did you do any research before getting a hamster, and/or did you provide the proper care?

''Yes. After I heard about the accidental Robo litter, I did lots of research on Robos. So when I got Pumpkin in October I was as least slightly prepared and I gave her proper care, but I still made plenty of mistakes with taming and cage setup.''

 

 

 

What was the funniest thing any of your hamsters did?

''Pumpkin used to like to push her food dish off the little platform it was on. I found it really cute.''

 

 

What species of hamsters have you had?

'' I have only owned a Robo. I have cared for quite a few Syrians by now through my pet boarding business. For some reason not many people in my local area who go on holiday have dwarfs!''

 

 

 

How many hamsters do you have now / Are you planning to get hamsters any time soon?

''Sadly my Robo Pumpkin was put to sleep on Tuesday 28th July due to a fast-growing tumour. I hope to get another dwarf or Chinese hamster before the end of the year. It being summer, I'm very busy with other people's pets so I'm putting off getting another hamster until after August at least.'''

 

 

 

What was your favorite thing to do with your hamsters?

''Like most Robos, Pumpkin wasn't a hamster I could really handle. My favourite thing was just to watch her hamstering in her cage.''

 

 

 

What do you want Pet stores to change based on Hamster care?

''I would like pet stores to stock more correct size cages and wheels and give better advice to customers. I think every pet store should have a large hamster cage set up like it should be, on display for customers to see, so they know what they're getting into before buying a hamster. I feel that pet stores are a necessary evil to prevent a deluge of unregulated backyard breeders filling a gap in the market, but there are many improvements I wish they would make.''

 

 

 

What is the thing you hate most about bad hamster care?

''I hate how hamsters are seen as less of a real pet than cats or dogs. This is the root of many evils in small pet care in my opinion. The general public tolerates far more abuse of small rodents than they would of cats or dogs. Everyone knows that a puppy isn't a child's toy, but a long term commitment that requires proper care. Many people don't think the same way about hamsters. They think it's ok to get a hamster to be a child's 5 minute wonder, and when they get bored, it can just stay in its cage, or be sold online. Also, If there was a product that killed cats and dogs like fluffy bedding kills hamsters, it would have been withdrawn long ago, but fluffy bedding is still available to buy.''

 

 

Do you have ideas how to stop Hamster abuse? 

'' Better education, mostly from pet shops. Most people don't want to be cruel, they just don't know better. In my pet boarding business I often get Syrians come in with tiny wheels and in small cages, but they come from the most loving and dedicated owners who can't really think badly of. They're just misinformed. This could so easily be avoided in pet shops gave out proper information when selling pets.''

 

 

Do you think hamsters deserve as much love as any other pet?

''Of course!''

Why did you decide to be interviewed, IsAnyoneThere?

''I saw the post and thought it would be interesting, even though I wasn't sure what I was going to be interviewed about!''

 

 

 

What made you choose a hamster as a pet?

''They are cute. No other reason!''

 

 

What was your first experience with a hamster?

''I got my first hamster when I was about 5 or 6 years old. Obviously technically it was my parents' but I was allowed to help clean and feed and pet it.''

 

 

Did you do any research before getting a hamster, and/or did you provide the proper care?

''No lol, I was 5 years old. When I was 12 or so I had another hamster, and I had a book that I read about care. Bear in mind, the internet *literally* didn't exist. You couldn't Google anything or go on a forum. The hamster care book gave some decent care advice but would be seen as massively outdated now. Which it is, being 30-odd years old!''

 

 

What was the funniest thing any of your hamsters did?

''I had a real escape artist Syrian who would do literally anything to get out of any enclosure at all. She would do the most ridiculous things like piling all her bedding up to block her wheel, then pushing the wheel to the side so she could reach the lid, then monkey-barring across to the one corner that was slightly loose and managing to push it open. ''

 

 

What species of hamsters have you had?

''Syrian x 10+?, RCD dwarf x 2, RCD/WW hybrid dwarf x 2, Roborovski x 1. I think I may have forgotten some''

 

 

How many hamsters do you have now / Are you planning to get hamsters any time soon?

''I have 2 Syrians at the moment, no current plans to get another but if/when one of these passes then I would be on the lookout for a dwarf.''

 

 

What was your favorite thing to do with your hamsters?

''Watch them.''

 

 

What do you want Pet stores to change based on Hamster care?

''Stop selling small cages and make it more transparent to customers that this isn't a pocket-pet that is "cheap" and "easy".''

 

 

What is the thing you hate most about bad hamster care?

''That it harms the hamster :(''

 

 

Do you have ideas how to stop Hamster abuse? 

''It depends what you mean by abuse. If you mean poor care, spreading knowledge, mainly. A lot of people aren't "abusing" their hamsters, they just don't know what they are doing is poor care. For *actual* animal abuse (eg. if someone is deliberately harming a creature), then we have laws in place to stop that and get those people arrested and charged.''

 

 

Do you think hamsters deserve as much love as any other pet?

''Errrr... obviously?''
