Hi,

I already have a 10 inch silent runner wheel, but i’m Thinking about adding a flying saucer to my Prevue t28mcage for Chip, my dwarf hamster.

I can get a 7.25 inch or 12 inch. I would appreciate hearing your thoughts.

Thank you.

Jody

Hello!

I’ve used the 7.25” flying saucer with no issues with my dwarfs, but if your hamster is on the larger end (over 3-3.5”) I would just steer clear from saucers entirely. The 12” flying saucer is only recommended in really large cages because it takes up so much room.

But, even then, a saucer really isn’t needed—some hamsters are a lot more happy with another hide/tunnel/sand bath in that same spot :)

Robin,

Thanks for the information. Chip has a hide he ignores, a bendable bridge he doesn’t use either, a twig tunnel he buried, and tunnel tubes he burrowed underneath. He loves to pouch food, and has a pretty elaborate burrow network under the bedding. He loves running on his wheel, but when I want to try to tame him, sometimes he will disappear into one of his burrows, won’t take treats, or anything. I’ve only had him 3 weeks, so I am still going slow, but thinking of pulling some of the decorations, and adding the second wheel.

I don’t think he’s used the sand bath either. I put a jelly jar in the cage, and he filled it with bedding, and has about 1/4 inch of food hidden in it. He is my first hamster, and I am just looking for other people’s experiences as well, so I have an idea as to how to proceed.

For a long time, I have been offering my dwarfs both standard wheels and saucers. Saucers provide great enrichment and my dwarfies always love to dart from wheel to saucer and back to the wheel. My dwarfs have used the 7.25 inch saucers with no issues and I really couldn't imagine using a 12 inch for a dwarf. They're pretty clunky in that size and they do take up a lot of space.

Hamsters really only need one wheel, so the 10inch you have should be enough. If he isn’t using his other items, maybe try rearranging? Also make sure you have over 6inches of bedding so he can burrow

Hello :)

I agree with charlotte ^^

I personally don't like saucers just because no matter how big you go, it will always bend your hams back ever so slightly.

My ham didn't use his tunnels for MONTHS and suddenly, he started using them everyday. I guess they use it when they want to? I personally wouldn't get a saucer but it's ofcourse up to you!

Saucers are pretty controversial, some don't like them for reasons and some love them! I would say it's fine for a robo, not more because like Fufu said, their backs bend but if you get a big enough saucer for a robo, they will be fine and my robo loves his saucer too!

Either is fine but I would say 12 inch

Also, just a tip, I would follow the topic because when a person replies, you will get a notification and you don't need to go back and forth to see if someone replied :)

Quoting people would give them notifications too if you would like to talk

Hi! I personally wouldn't get the flying saucer if you already have a wheel, since they are quite contreversial. It is harder for them to run because it is an natural positions, can cause back problems, they can fly off, and more, which is why I personnaly think that flying saucers ARENT good for hamsters. Since you said he already uses the current wheel, I think that the money going towards the saucer would be better off going towards something like enrichment oppritunites.

If you are going to get it (which I wouldnt reccomend for money and safety sake [see above for the risks]), I would reccomend getting the 12" one. This way, if you get a larger one, there is a lower chance of him devolping back issues, yet the other risks are just as high. Even though it takes up a lot of room, the 12" would be better so it is slightly more safe. (even though I think they aren't safe AT ALL for so many reasons. my previous hamster went flying off of hers and hurt herself)

I would have to disagree :(

Robos are the fastest species and I think they deserve and need a wheel. It can be so easy for them to get flung on a saucer. I think, if you provide both, it's fine but you shouldn't solely rely on a saucer. It's overall IMO not great for any species (imo).

Also thx for calling me Fufu hehe

Oh auhah sorry Fufu was the only name that came to mind ;-;

Also, I do have a wheel and a saucer for him but, not sure if the wheel size is correct? An 8 inch? Is that a bit too small? Should I get a silent spinner? Not sure-

Lol dw :D

MY RECOMMENDATIONS (inches)
Robo- 7-10
RCD, WW and Hybrids- 8-12
Chinese Hamsters 8-12
Syrians - 10-12+

These are my personal recommendations for classic wheels.. not sure if it would be the same for saucers tho..

Word of advice to everyone, if you really wanna get a saucer, make sure you have an appropriate sized wheel as well which is always in the enclosure (my personal advice) :D

Yeah we should stop. It's just that other people had questions that were similar and were putting it on here.

So I would recommend getting a closed wheel because flying saucers can fling hamsters at high speeds.
