Hi guys!!!
I have been reading through lots of different topics and I thought this would be a fun one! This is a place to explain how you chose your hamster and why. I am really interested in this as I love the heart warming stories. I hope you guys like the topic to!!
My hamster story:
We went to a anti- mill pet store to buy a hamster. I was super excited because this was to be my first pet other than fish. When we got there I looked at the fantastic selection of hamsters. This one hamster stood out to me overt every other one. All the other hamsters seemed to be getting on with their day but this hamster came up to me. He put his tiny little paws up against the cage and tried to sniff my finger. I INSTANTLY fell in love with this super friendly, special hamster. By that time, it was getting to be Lunch so I had to go home to eat. I was so nervous as I left the store to return later that afternoon. What if my special friend had been sold by the time I got back out. After Lunch and when I was back in the store, I ran over to this hamsters cage. For one heart breaking moment I thought this hamster had been sold. But no, in the corner of the cage was the little bundle of fluff I had hoped to see.
And that is the story of Toffee.
Please share your stories to!
Thank you!

I don't really have a story. I was buying from a breeder and I told her surprise me. I didn't care about the gender or how the hamster looked. My other topic in the hamster pregnancy forum tells most of it for the female hamster's side. She already has a home waiting for her, so I can't call her mine. I have to find homes for the surprise litter she had. Unfortunately I don't have the space for all of them.

The guy in my avatar, I was trying to rehome him but I got attached to him while taming him and playing with him since I couldn't touch mum with babies. He had a few people who "definitely wanted him" and they all backed out last minute. So I decided to keep him.

When I went to get my first hamster,it was the day after Christmas. Yup,you guessed it! All I had wanted for Christmas was a hamster! I had my heart set on a panda hamster I was going to name shoes. I was young! Lol! The store was an hour away and when we there I was so excited! I had never had a pet besides a puppy. We walked into the store and asked for help. Only three cages of hamsters were left. Every other rodent had been sold! They employee lifted up three igloos in three separate cages. One was labeled “Panda Hamster” but the hamster was very big and very sleepy! It didn’t spark my interest and I felt sad. Then the employee lifted the second igloo. Under it were three baby hamsters labeled “Fancy Hamster” and they were the typical golden hamster colors. I was set on black and white. Mom said “We can come back in a few days, you don’t have to get it now”. The last igloo was lifted. The cage was labeled “Dalmatian Hamster” underneath was one tiny black and white hamster. She ran right out and up to the glass! I told Mom I wanted that one! They boxed her up and Mom wouldn’t let me hold the box on my lap. Just in case. She told me to put the box in the cage we brought while we ran in a restaurant to pick up pizza. We came back out and she had shredded half her box and was bouncing round the cage! I ended up naming her Climber and she was a he. Well. A year later I found out the true gender! A she!

After a bad experience with my sisters Syrian I decided I wanted a roborovski dwarf this time. I wanted a pied,or one white and one agouti. At the first store they had two tiny baby agouti sisters! They were super cute but I didn’t want two the same color. I went to the next store and they had one white and four agouti. All in the same cage. There was something about them that didn’t seem right. They had bite marks on them, too and weren’t friendly. I passed. But I couldn’t stop thinking about the first two,and realized I had to have them! We went back after we finished the other errands and I was so scared they wouldn’t be there! But they were! I had brought my own carrier and these babies were friendly! They didn’t run from the employees hands and the employee was petting them! I never looked back...

THE END

Mine isn't much of a story, except that she came a day early. My hamster was a birthday present, and we decided to have the cage set up before my birthday so that we could get the hamster on the actual day (the official plan was to go see Avengers: Endgame and then go get the hammie, but I'm glad we didn't- that movie was emotional enough, I didn't need to cry over the adorableness of my new friend too ). So the week before, we'd made the cage, but it was only the day before that we actually went and got all the stuff- food, toys, bedding, everything. Well, almost everything. Spoiling your ham never really ends! While we were there, we went and looked at the hamster section. I knew I wanted a dwarf, but I didn't know what kind. But the second I saw the "DJ" (winter white) hamsters, I knew. One of them was asleep, but the other was up and zooming around the cage and being generally adorable. I felt bad for the poor things, though. All the two of them had was one wire wheel and a plastic igloo.

Later, when I had the cage all set up, my Mom offered to go get her that night. There was no decision, really- one minute we were in the house, the next we were at the pet store. When the woman asked if I wanted "hamster one" or "hamster two", pointing to each respectively, she was already reaching for the first. I don't know why, but I just stopped her and said hamster two. Even my Mom asked why. Something about the second one resonated with me more than the first, I guess. I'm not sure.

We stopped at Walgreens on the way back, and I stayed in the car, just. Marveling. This little hamster was really right in front of me. This little thing was really a part of our family now.

I don't remember if I officially picked the name before or after getting her, but a couple weeks before, my sister had suggested "Sam the Ham". And thus, Sammy, or Sam the Ham, came into our life. :)

I have had seven hamsters now. I'll go through a little about each one.

I got my first hamster, Harvey, from a local pet store. I had been wanting a hamster for awhile, but hadn't been seriously looking. We went into the shop for my dog's grooming and Harvey gave his typical "Harvey stare" and I fell in love with his dark eyes. He was a Cream Band Long Haired Syrian. I went home to set up the cage for him and came back and took him home.

After I lost Harvey, I had been watching a lot of HoppingHammy's videos and couldn't keep my eyes off of Streudel. I knew then that I wanted a Winter White. I was at Petco and they had two of the sweetest girls. When I held Wynter, she looked up at me and I knew it was meant to be. She was perfect. She was the sweetest hamster ever and always wanted to come out.

About 6 months after I got Wynter, I contracted "robo-fever". I saw a robo on craigslist and convinced my mom to let me email the seller. He was already sold and I was crushed. After that, I started to get more serious. I bought another cage and got everything set up. I was at a local pet store and they had a litter of babies. I went about once a week and watched them grow up until I could bring one home. I picked Wydget because he was by himself, and I knew I only wanted one. He was really shy, but he was so fun to watch.

After Wynter had to be put to sleep, I was incredibly upset. I looked at a few hamsters, but never really felt a spark. Ever since I got Harvey I had wanted a Long Haired Sable Female. I found Raphina at a local shop and my mom was the one that really pushed me to go ahead and get her. She was probably sick of taking me to look at hamsters. When I put Raphina in her travel cage, her personality began to show. She was very energetic and at the same time, had a regal quality to her. (She's the ham in my profile pic)

While I had Wydget and Raphina, I was missing Wynter a lot. She was a lot more interactive and Wydget and Raphina were both pretty shy, independent hamsters. When Wydget died, I decided to get a Winter White again. After calling every pet store I could and scanning the internet for adoptables, I went to a local shop and picked up Nova. She was identical to all the other Winter Whites there, but I decided on her because she was a female and she sniffed my finger as I reached in the cage. I will have had her for 2 1/2 years this January.

The day Raphina died I recall as being "happy-sad" (Sing Street reference anyone?). I was crushed to know she was gone, but I scanned the Humane Society website and saw Zira, just posted minutes before. We loaded up the travel cage and took her home that day. She looks and acts a lot like Nova, but they do have their differences. Zira will be 2 years in February.

In April, my aunt contacted me asking if I wanted a hamster that one of her relatives was rehoming. I have a big heart when it comes to critters, and she knew it. She sent me the picture, and I saw Gus in a tiny cage and I had to take him. He wasn't treated the best, and the kids in the family didn't really understand how to interact with a hamster. Now that I have him, he loves his wheel, burrowing, and just being a hamster. He's a little over a year old now.

I got my syrian Hazel just a few days after I moved to Texas. I was going to the pet store with my family to pick up some dog food or something, and I went to go look at the animal while we waited for them to mix the food (Pet's Barn does custom dog food). When I walked to the hamster tank, there was Hazel, standing on her hind legs with her paws against the glass, in broad daylight, dancing back and forth against the glass like a maniac.

I showed my mom, and she agreed that we HAD to take her home.

I didn't want her to stay in the pet store any longer- she obviously hated it, so we took her home about 2 days later.

She started out in a too-small bin cage until we were unpacked enough to get her a 40g breeder, then she moved to a detolf. All this happened within a month or so, so she wasn't in a too-small cage for too long.

My original hamster has a more interesting story so I will say his.

So it was my birthday and my 2 besties mum and susstet were at the petshop. I had got and set up the cage a week ago so was ready. When I went into the pet shop I ran over to the tank thing and looked at all the Syrians. This gorgeous ginger one got up and walked up to the glass. ( stepping on one of his cage mates as he went lol) he instantly did a huge yawn and fell asleep presses up to the glass were my hand was resting. I fell in love with him but obviously my friends both loved a panda hamster ( it was a black and whight Syrian) they were saying I should get him and they named him cow.
It took ages for a staff to eventually stop there work and help us. By which times my friends were looking at fish.

I ended up with the golden Syrian and named him autumn.
RIP over the rainbow bridge autumn🐹

i’ve had many hams before and i currently have three but my most recent ham, i had actually gone to the pet shop to buy more whimzees but of course i always have to look at the rodents, and i saw this one little orange dwarf sleeping in the corner. i had lost my syrian a few days prior and i started crying when i saw her because she was just so cute and i had been so sad about my syrian so i figured since i already had three hamsters i could handle three again, and i ended up impulse buying a 40 gallon breeder for her

I usually go to the pet store, I know about mills but it's literally my only option. I look at all the hamsters, and observe they're behavior, then I usually have a favorite, and I'll see if I can reserve them and sleep on my desicion.
