Ok so I have a few more questions (I hope you don't mind me asking I'm kinda curious), so my first question is, how do you tell if a snail is male or female, or are they both? How long does it take for the eggs to hatch, and do you have to separate the babies, if you do why?
Do you get your snails from like a pet store or are they from outside? If they're from outside do you have to provide them with the same things they would get from the outdoors, e.g. Plants, plant pots, soil, wood, sticks ext.?
I feel like it would be really cool to have snails one day, but my dad wouldn't let me because he doesn't really like them. Xx
The snails i previously had were gonna be thrown away because the person was clearing out there garden and throwing away giant bushes full of snails so i took them in for a bit then released them a few months later in a wildlife bushy area, and the ones i have now are also from my garden again from clearing out plants and there food sources and i take in injured ones too
U can buy from some exotic petshops but those need different care and requirements, they need petshop dirt and not the stuff from outside that gardens can use, also plants must be cleaned for store bought snails. Garden snails can use stuff from the garden with no cleaning or problems. They are both female and male and do lay a lot of eggs quite often, im sitting with 60 slug eggs right now
They arent really much of a problem especially if u keep one or two, tell ur dad they are much cooler than they get there reputation for being 'pests', they are fun to watch and care for.
I separate the babies from the adults because the breathing holes in the adult container is big enough for them to escape so i keep babies in a store bought special made habitat with tiny holes so they cant escape
Also there enclosure needs to be misted and i have a thermometer to measure the temp, they like it a bit cold, wet and humid. But humidity makes the adults breed like crazy so then u will have to check for eggs every week(normally in the sand or under bark or leaf litter) if u want to get snails it would be easier to just keep two or three at the start, otherwise too many will be overwhelming to maintain
I use clear storage boxes with holes drilled in everywhere for the adults or medium sized snails and slugs. Fairly cheap at plastic stores just need the right dimensions
