Hi all,

Kind of an odd question, but has anyone ever used a puzzle playground for animals other than rodents? I ask because I was going through some of my old hamster stuff, and came across all of my puzzle playground pieces from my syrians, who have since passed. I was thinking of putting a simple build together for my axolotl (a species of aquatic salamander). Just wanted to know if anyone has tried something like that before and whether or not it was safe to use. Thankfully, none of my hamsters were big chewers, and the puzzle playground pieces are still in great condition.

Thanks in advance!

My bunny had one as a treat ball, where he had to pick it up and through it around to get them out.

Is the axolotl in water? It sounds like a fish of some sort.

Yeah, he's in water. Just upgraded him from a ten-gallon aquarium to a 20, and the aquarium is looking a little bare now

Is plastic commonly used in axolotl tanks? If yes, then it should be safe.
Curious, is an axolotl a fish? Because a salamander is a lizard? So fish or lizard? Excuse my unducatednesd on that subject!

Maybe. I'm surprised that your Syrian fit in it, it's so small. Just try it out :)

Some aquarium decor is plastic, so I would think it's safe. Axolotls are a species of salamander, which is in the amphibian family. Salamanders are more closely related to frogs than they are to lizards :)

To be fair, I had two sets of them and my Syrians were all on the smaller side :)

I also used to make water bottle stands with them and they worked great!

I wouldn't trust an unspecified plastic in an aquatic tank, especially not when it was previously used with other pets & wasn't designed for underwater use.

I don't know much about axolotls but I get the sense that they're pretty delicate animals, and if some coating or trace of leftover ammonia (and/or whatever you used to sanitize it) came off in the water: that could be quite bad.

I would worry if it was a water safe plastic and secondly if it could cause damage to the gills. If you use it clean it very well and test all the sides with a nylon. If the nylon catches then it could harm their gills. Either file it down until it's smooth or don't use it. Axolotl's are super fragile creatures.
