Unfortunately, our cats are not friends with hamsters. The hamster cage is in the nursery, and we need to keep that door shut. I read several articles on this topic and learned that any cat needs time to get used to a new pet. Besides, there are many hilarious videos on YouTube of hamsters playing with cats. I hope that one day I will be able to make a video like that and share it with you. While I was looking for some information on this topic, I found an interesting blog called Catademy. To be honest, it's always been a problem for me to give pills or vitamins to my cat, and I'm glad I found a way to do it easily and quickly with the help of a cat pill popper. I'd like to hear some feedback from anyone who used this device on their cats. I really appreciate any help you can provide.

Unfortunately, my cat is very aggressive towards my hamster. The hamster appeared quite recently and I am worried about his life. What can you advise? I turned to my veterinarian for help, he explained that animals need a little time to get used to each other, but perhaps the cat can instinctively attack the hamster. In order to avoid such a situation, I try to constantly provide the cat with a lot of cat food, so that such a desire does not arise. It may be better to isolate the hamster and keep him constantly in a cage, then this will limit his freedom. What to do?

For interest, this is my cats' favourite sleeping spot in my study :)

cats%26hams.jpg

They watch, intently, but have never tried anything like batting at the cage (and Dilly totally ignores them and just hamsters on regardless), then inevitably they get bored and fall asleep.

I don't let them in the room when I'm not there, just in case (though most likely situation would be them getting bitten if they tried to put a paw through the bars) but I'm happy with them sitting and watching while I'm here. If the hamsters looked nervous, hid, froze etc., ie showed any stress behaviour, then the cats would be banished, of course, but I've not seen any acknowledgement at all lol :D To me, if a hamster is going about its business of hamstering, out in the open, running on the wheel, burrowing, playing on toys, climbing, chewing etc. then it's not a "bothered" hamster :)

[edit] the cat in the bottom of the picture, he puts his head there on the cage because it's where Dilly's sleeping-burrow is, so it's warm lol. I think it's sort of symbiotic..... he lies up against the warm spot, the hamster finds a warm spot and sleeps there lol

ok it’s 2021 but this is the same with me lol

i have 2 hamsters and 1 cat and i just shut my cat out of the room at night just in case she tries something, during the day she sit and stare and if the hamsters move she'll watch them, but i dont think she would ever try to hurt them she's been around a number of small animals since she was a kitty [lizards, snakes, fish] and the most she would do is sleep on their enclosure , she is an indoor cat so she never killed anything except a couple of flys lol

Welp, lemme just say that my dwarf hamster got killed by my cat. Through the bars. In the middle of the night. And had her vital organs ripped off and her head probably got eaten.

GReAt stArT tO tHE dAy!!

(So, I wouldn't recommend it, unless your cat isn't like my cat and will kill all who dare to come into her majesty's house.)

Edit: :duh:  Just realized this is a 3 year old topic sorry, I guess this is just a warning to all who see this

How?

Sorry for your loss, but I just don't see how this would happen. If the bar spacing is small enough to house a dwarf, I cannot see how a ca could get their paws in and do the damage you're describing. Dwarf hamster bar spacing should be around 0.5-0.7cm, so yes, I could imagine that if your hamster was climbing the bars that the cat could scratch it and injure it, but I cannot see how on earth it would be able to rip its organs out and eat its head, through the bars of the cage  :dizzy:  Again, sorry for your loss, and I don't want to doubt you, but this just doesn't seem likely as you've described it.

Thank you for wording this kindly.

I checked the bar spacing of the bars and they are aproximatly 1 cm apart, so maybe that played a factor?

I always assumed it was my cat who captured, killed, and beheaded her because that night, she was VERY interested in my dwarf and I had to constantly carry her away from the cage, she was even clawing at it with her claws and reaching inside. Also, it makes sense according to her personalty. She likes to behead every animal she caught, including the two small birds she ripped the heads off of and left the bodies to decay in our front yard.

Also, it may have happened like the dwarf escaped, and when she escaped my cat caught her and killed her?? I'm not really sure, but I am very certain that my cat was the culprit behind it.

Either way, from now on my hamsters always have to be kept in a separate room away from our cat.

My male cat Diego and my winter white mini love each other. Diego has proven he can be trusted she got out several times and every time I have either found her sleeping on her or he has very gently picked her up and brought her to me. She seems very relaxed when he's there

I have the same question. I have a hamster, she lives in a plastic, wired cage . I want to adopt two kittens, but I am not sure how they will interact with my hamster. Should I buy a glass cage for her? Can it cause respiratory problems? Is it possible to organize a common play space (something like this https://catspurfection.com/best-cat-trees-for-large-cats.html ?) for my hamster and cats (I will always watch when they play together)

Hi! I would either keep the kittens away from the hamster (ie a different room) as there has been cases of cats killing hamsters through the bars, or I would get a tank (I would recommend at least a 40G Breeder, but bigger is better!). Tanks won't cause resporory problems, unlike it will with rats. I also wouldn't let the cats play with the hamster, even if you are watching, because all it takes is a tiny scratch for the cat to get a serious-to-fatal infection.

Hope this helps!

I think the outcome depends a lot on the disposition of the cat and how strong their prey drive is. I've cats who genuinely did not care, or who even treated hamsters gently. But my current cats are known rodent murderers - used to live in a building where every apartment had a mouse problem except ours - so my hamster lives in a part of the house that is off-limits to cats, and they will not be having contact.

My cat likes to play with the hamster, but there is no harm in it. I am glad that they have become good friends. They don't play like predator and prey but more like brother and sister. It makes me happy because I was afraid to let them play because I was worried about the hamster, even though it is in the cage all the time. I'm sure you can find a lot of useful advice in this regard if you visit site. I found an article that describes it all perfectly and clearly. That is why I prefer a careful approach to such an event as a game of cat and hamster. And what do you do in such cases?

This unlikely, sorry. Please don't let your hamster and your cat "play", they won't "become friends" - at best you will have a stressed out hamster who is in proximity to a predator and two creatures who are tentatively tolerating each others existence.... worst case scenario either your hamster gets scared and bites your cat (=vet visit) or your cat gets "playful" and bites your hamster (=death).

My cat likes to watch my ham. It's quite annoying. Since I moved him to a 40 gal breeder, she will try to sit on the lid when he is awake. The ham doesn't seem to mind, but I don't like it. She is starting to learn not to go on the lid. Instead she will go to her cat tree which is about six feet away and try to watch him from there.
