Hi. I lost my miracle baby, Peach, back in November due to old age. Since then, I have kind of drifted away from hamsters a little bit and started researching other animals. Then I thought, even though I don't have a hamster anymore, I can still help other hams. Here's the challenge:

Contact PetSmart, Petco, Pets at Home, any big chain pet store. Instead of yelling at them, tell them how they can genuenly improve. Tell them about the things you would like to see change. Please try to participate and make a difference :)

This is a nice idea, though my aren't would never let me do it. They're not in love with hamster like me, and they don't really care about proper hamster care, soo...

This is a good idea and may help change some pet stores ways and contribute to a brighter future for hamsters

It won't do anything to call a store. you'd need to call the corporate headquarters. telling a person at a stores whos job is only to run a cash register and clean up after animals won't care to move the info on and most of the time even if they told the store manager the manager would not do anything as they have so much work to do already. (trust me the paper work of being a manager in any store is a lot. just counting all the money at the end of the day is a hassle and takes hours for most managers.

now if you call corporate where there is job is to move on info like that it may do something but unless you have tens of thousands of people calling nothing will happen.

as long as they are still selling the stuff and making profit they will keep selling it. so before you make a post telling people to call a store do some research on ways that will actually help and not just annoy workers who have nothing to do with what you are calling about.

I've actually decided to start with my small home-town mom and pop stores. Thought being that if I can help change enough of the little things at those types of stores, maybe it would have a domino effect on the larger ones. They've stopped selling fluffy bedding and wire wheels, and I'm currently working on getting them to carry better cage sizes. They do have a 40 GB that they carry, but I'm trying to get them to start offering the Super CritterTrail (not the best, but better than current) or the Prevue 528. I am on good terms with both the store manager and owner, and they legitimately make an effort. Baby steps are still steps :)

yeah calling a mom and pop shop where they are the head office would have the best results. I bet its just really expensive for them to buy and then try to resell some appropriate stuff. as more hamster appropriate cages and what not are spendy,

Honestly, I think our efforts are better spent in working towards government policy changes. For example: in my city, activists and local government worked together and banned the sale of cats and dogs in pet stores; as a result, there's been a massive increase in adoptions and it's helping to end puppy mills.

Unfortunately, giant corporations like Petsmart and Petco, really only care about profits. I wish I could read German, it seems like they've been quite successful in codifying animal welfare.

And other folks have mentioned this, but definitely support your local pet supply store!
