Hamsters don't just suffer from cages and bedding, yes i get what your saying but there is also pet stores that may not take care of them well, or actual owners that don't treat them well. I'm a hammy Mom i spoil my hammys, and i agree that all of them deserve the best of the best because they absolutely do. Unfortunately we can't save all of them but maybe we should encourage more things people that don't do well with them, on what they should do with them. I know so many people that have them and don't deserve to have them like keeping them in there cages all the time and not putting them in there balls or not paying attention to them. I think that pet stores need to be more stricter on the people who go to buy them or any other animal for that matter and see how intrested they really are and how caring and loving they are towards them. Make them take a paper survey on how well they take care of there other pets. I do agree others need to be more serious about it but lets face it, how are we going to start this? I complain to petsmart about how they don't even know the hammies birthday or genetics or any other animals, and guess what answer i get and remember this is from the store manager too, she says that they have no idea. And then do they have any idea what kind of environment there animals come from with the breeders that sell them to the stores? I know that Arizona's getting in trouble from breeders mistreating the animals and not taking care of them at all leaving them to starve in there own waste, that's why you see hamsters or any other animal sick sometimes. The petsmart in American Fork Utah gets there hamsters from California though but i don't know for sure if the breeder there is even good or not because i see sick hammies all the time there too.

Yes I see how pet stores/the owner can mistreat the hammies to. The thing is that this is something that simply can't be fixed. The only way to really educate lots of people of hamster care is making a forum/really good hamster care book or youtub channel... which is something that many people can't do. This is why I'm manly focusing on supplies. One forum can't completely get rid of mills but we can get rid of a certain type of small cage if we all work together.

It could be a okay hut but that's 40$ for a hut that you could diy for free. Plus I really don't what to support the company that makes this stuff. :| :(

Ohh , I did not realize the cost, I did see a cute ceramic hut at my thrift store that was only 1 dollar  though.

I'm sorry but reality wise it doesn't just work that way because they can go and say that the smaller cages are for the smaller hammies.

If that happens, you have to offer proof or an article to the person. Also, this hashtag is for all hamsters, not just Syrians. :)

EDIT: fixed something

Well it doesn't matter because they all have a soul. :) I'm sorry you feel that way. Have a blessed day! ❤

What do you mean it doesn't matter? What exactly doesn't matter?

I suppose the fight for hamsters needs to go one step at a time.

I've actually been intending to send a letter to crittertrail. I can't think of any way to protest other than not buying their products. Kaytee i just try not to buy any products from just because their cages are honestly cruel. Unfortunately, most people don't care about small animal care, and if you try to raise awareness, you can be called stuff like a hippie or a social justice warrior or something. All i can think to do is leave bad reviews on products, contact the people who make those products, make a petition, and tell anyone you know who owns/plans to own a hamster or other small animal. it's all we can really do :(

I agree, its hard to make a change.  You can help but its next to impossible for one person to get rid of crittertrails or cotton bedding or mills.

The only thing that can really be done is to try and help in as many ways as possible.  Maybe you can't get rid of crittertrails but you can save a few hamsters and/or help make it known about bad hamster supplies and stuff.

On the bright side kaytee just made a cage thats 540 square inches, marketed FOR HAMSTERS!!!  Definitely a step in the right direction.  :)

What exactly doesn't matter? That big hams need big cages or...all hams need large cages regardless of their size.

I feel so bad for the hamsters that have lived, and live in such poor conditions. :( I look at my crittertrail that i use for traveling, and I can't imagine my babies in that. You can't even fit a house and wheel in it! (literally I've tried)

There were multiple people at my old school that wanted hams and were planing to put them in "The colorful cages from the pet store" I tried to convince to them nicely that hamsters like large cages, but they said, "Oh but those are too expensive!" A crittertrail is like $50 when a bin is $15. One of them i was able to convince. I printed her out a proper care sheet and gave it to her. (she didn't have any devices so she couldn't do research.)

I hope that in the future, hopefully the more near future, at least most of the tiny cages will be taken off the market.

I'm writing bad reviews onn amazon hamster cages right now.

EDIT: Hey guys? Why don't we choose one cage on one specific online site, and just swarm it with bad reviews? We could do one cage every few days. Someone just bring up a link, and everyone on this topic can review it. Hmm? I say this one first: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0002DJ4SY/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_0 Try to go encouraging advice, though, because people won't listen to someone who's practically screaming at you. Metion bin cages, HH, anything :)

I don't know Hippophile, I see your intention but I'm unsure if that is the right approach.
