I wondered how may of you have heard of an axolotl? They basically look like this:

I'm thinking of owning one in the future.

I seriously wanted one until I figured out that they need coolers to keep the water cold enough for them, and those things are REALLY expensive. There are alternatives you can use but I didn't think they were reliable enough lol. But if you have $200, $400 dollars for the cooler plus extra then that's awesome! Axolotls are really cool looking, if I had the money I'd definitely get one.

I have two - they are pretty cool. They definitely have a lot of "wow" factor - people always like to look at pictures of mine. They don't do much, though. They aren't really difficult to care for as long as you aren't squeamish about worms - the biggest catch is keeping them cool, but unless you keep your house warm, they normally do fine at room temperature. I think they can be a bit challenging to find in some places. Our local fish store sells them, so I guess we are lucky here.

i've heard of them.  Aren't they also called mexican salmandars? and it's not a fish it's a amphimbian. We got to care for them back when i did animal management at college before i changed colleges.

They're SO cute! Their little ears/fins are so adorable! Their colors are really cool too. I'd seriously love an axolotl.. they're one of my favorites. :)

Axolotls are basically Mexican Salamanders that don't evolve to their Salamander form. I didn't know there was an amphibian section so I just put it in the fish section because they live in aquariums.

The cooling part of owning one really sucks, but I do have enough money for one! :D If I can find an axolotl near me (an I have a cycled tank for it), I'll absolutely be taking it home!

There's this breeder (Michael Shroom) that sells Axolotls and everyone that I've seen says he's good and ethical. I'd still ask him questions about his ethics before buying though. I belive he ships them anywhere in the US when he has then available, though I *think* depending on where you live he won't ship them during certain seasons because of temperature extremes or something.
He sells eggs, juveniles, and adults I think. I have his Email somewhere, I'll give it to you when I find it if you're interested :)

Thanks! I don't have a ready tank yet, but that would be awesome :)

Fun fact: a giant axolotl is what saved bill cipher from really dying in gravity falls. (canon);)

Well for if or when you're ready to get one, here's his Email:
shrommj@ptd.net
If you want to get monthly (well almost monthly) updates on what amphibians he has available/will have in the future, just email him and ask to be put on the email list.

I own an axolotl, they're interesting little creatures though they don't do a whole lot. Rarely do I see them at pet stores near me. Breeders are great to check out if you see a specific colouring that spikes your interest and craigslist has them sometimes as well.

I think I've heard this from pretty much everyone I know who owns axolotls.  Mine are that way, too. They pretty much just sit around waiting for food. Sometimes they move to sit somewhere else for a while, but that's pretty much it. They are really cool pets for showing off to people - they always get a big reaction from people - but if you like actually watching your pet do things they probably aren't the pet for you  :rotfl: . I like them though - they are super low maintenance and it's fun to show off pictures of them to people. I had three but ended up with two males and a female, so gave the female to a friend who had always wanted one.

Yes! They're definitely a conversation starter, never have I met a person familiar with the name. Most people are in awe when they see their complex, unique look. Somehow, owning something that literally does nothing but exist can give you so much pleasure.
