Ok, so this just came up on our national news:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lancashire-38906351

[edit: Just realised there is a video on the news site, but there is a warning attached to it. Hope this is okay - it's doesn't show anything bad, just the hamster eating and drinking. If I can, I'll find a news link without the video]

This guy has been sent to prison for feeding his hamster cannabis and LSD!   :) It's great to see that some judge actually took a case like this seriously (as it should be!!) rather than just thinking "oh, it's just a hamster". 3 other men were given community sentences for offences related to this.

The hamster and his dogs survived and have been rehomed, so a happy ending for all :)

His crimes listed were:

  • Causing a poisonous or injurious drug, namely cannabis, to be given to a hamster
  • Causing a poisonous or injurious drug, namely LSD, to be given to a hamster
  • Causing unnecessary suffering to Faith and Zeus (dogs) by failing to investigate and treat the causes of their poor body condition
  • Causing unnecessary suffering to Faith and Zeus by failing to provide veterinary care and attention for their facial and head injuries
  • Failing to meet the needs of Faith and Zeus by failing to provide them with a suitable environment

^ key point there, guys. It is actually illegal to fail to investigate and treat illnesses, and to fail to provide a suitable environment.

Isn't this story awesome? :) I feel this is a victory for animal justice   :) 4 grown men have actual criminal records now and one is actually going to prison, for cruelty to a hamster.

I hope Mr Chow (the hamster) had an awesome life with his new owners :) (and Faith and Zeus too).

Oh wow! I'm so happy the dogs and hamster lived! The poor thing. I'm glad they're in custody now.

EDIT: After watching the video it made me quite upset. I cannot believe someone could do that to an animal

for no reason at all! :(

Aww poor things. Good thing they are away from those jerks now. Some people are disgusting, what idiots. Makes me happy to see they got what they deserved, both the people and animals. Also props to that judge for taking this seriously.

Disgusting what people do. Poor things. I'm glad it all worked out okay in the end. :)

"This looks like it might be the end for Mr Chow." Or for you!

Wow... some people... They are willing to put the safety of a hamster at risk just because they want to be "funny" It's so disgusting.

I'm glad people took it seriously instead of saying "it's just a hamster".

Serves those people right and it's good they've been banned for owning pets for 8 years. Why would people be so cruel.
Isn't failing to treat illnesses etc part of the 5 animal needs? Animal welfare act because technically if you break one of those needs it's illegal.

Yup, that's why it's listed as one of the things they were charged with in court :)

You know what's really sad? No words being horrible enough to define people like that.

I'm so happy the hamster has a new home <3

These people should be banned from owning animals forever, not just 8 years.
