Having some sort of nesting material will encourage them to lay eggs and dig. Also if you didn't know they take dirt baths.
We use straw for our nesting material, but we've also used pine bedding, dirt, and other wood shavings.

So when I'm able, I would really like to have some Chickens! So I've been trying to learn basically everything about them, and how to care for them properly, any tips, tricks, or advise on Chicken care?
It really depends on what your using them for and how they're going to be kept, but I've got a few tips and things you should know.
1. If you've got layers they need about 13-15 hours of light a day to keep laying. In summer you should be fine with daylight but it's really handy to have light in the coop in the winter. Just turn it on in the morning at off at night.
2. If you mix diatomaceous earth in with the some dirt or sand, for a dirt bath, the diatomaceous earth will kill any bugs living on the birds. You can pick it up at most feed supply stores.
3. Feeders/waterers should be a couple inches of the ground to prevent the birds from pooping/kicking bedding in to them, and should be big enough that all the birds can use them at once, this discourages squabbling over food.
4. After using eggs using eggs you can crumble up the egg shells and add them to the feed, this helps strengthen shells on future eggs.
Hope this has helped! ![]()
