My mom's apartment is near a marsh, so we always get a bunch of toads in the backyard. I've recently been able to get a few photos of one-

I'm thinking american toad? But I'm not completely sure.

I'm inquiring as they seem to be easy pets to keep, and I seem to have most of the basic supplies one needs on hand. It also seems as though they aren't ideal for handling, which suits me just fine.

tl;dr - What kind of toad is this, and what kind of needs would it have?

So this is apparently an american or fowlers toad. Based on my research, my 20 gallon long is a lovely size for one, and the toys and supplies needed will cost me roughly $25-$40, depending on which water dish I choose, what substrate I go with, and if I buy fake plants or if I use real ones.

I'd say American.

That being said DO NOT take our herptiles out of their natural environment. Many of our herps are becoming threatened. Some are already endangered. When you remove them from the population, that removes one more breeding animal and it is detrimental to our ecosystems. They face other issues - pollution, habitat segregation, loss of wet lands, and even drivers. Some drivers go out of their way to hit our herps on the road.

Please leave him/her there. If you want to own a frog or toad, look at the pet store or a reptile breeder who has non-native species. It's illegal in many places to own natives, and it very negatively impacts our environment.

I normally would never consider taking a wild animal out of nature except for it seeming to be a commonly accepted practice on an amphibian forum.

But I totally get your point. Upon further research, most people agree that crickets are the best for them, and considering I'm deathly afraid of crickets, it wouldn't work out anyways.
