Hello, my new Syrian hamster, Paris, whom I got from Petsmart two days ago will like suddenly stop what he's doing and stare for- I kid you not, literally 15-20 minutes straight. Just standing still. Even when I leave the room for ten minutes when I come back he'll be doing the same...

I put a blueberry next to him and I went around to the other side of the cage and he just walked up towards my face, lied down and stared at me. That was 10 minutes ago, he's still in the same position. His eyes are open and he's just sitting there, now since I'm at my computer he's staring at the wall.

Has anyone else's hamster done this? I'm getting kind of worried because none of my past hamsters have done this and it's just weird to me...

Help?

Nightmare does this. I have no clue why they're doing this, but I think it's the same reason I do it: lala world. They just stare and let their minds wanter. If that's true, that'd be cool to see what they daydream about.

Just a theory, don't quote me on this. If this is wrong, quote and reply to this telling me why I am wrong!

All hamsters do this, they're basically (like HamsterCrazyKid said) having their mind wander, kind of just examining the sounds, scents, and sights around them.

Okay, thank you. It's just that none of my hamsters have done that before and the amount of time he just stops what he's doing (even if he's like running around the tank) then he'll just stare straight for 10 minutes. :rotfl:

Thanks everyone! <3 <3

Could it be something neurological? Yes, hamsters do freeze up for a few seconds when they are startled, but not for 10 minutes straight.

That's what I was thinking. I'll look into it tomorrow. :)

Actually they do this when they are startled. I believe it's a defense mechanism some animals use when they feel they are spotted by a predator, so they 'freeze up' movements to avoid being seen (if you ever seen the movie Rango it shows this). Sometimes a certain sight, smell, or sound will trigger it. They can actually say motionless for a few minutes if you leave them. Perhaps because he is new to you is isn't quite yet used to his surroundings yet and it makes him nervous?

Edit: Sorry Anson I'm not sure why it quoted you.  :sarcastic:
