Ok lets just move on. Everyone can say there opinion. So please make sure you make it nice and not offensive. (:

But no one has said anything in two days? So we kind of did move on. And one opinion was offensive, which was kind of the issue.

I'm wondering if the people opposed to feeding snakes eat meat... and if they've ever looked at it that way.

Anyway, you guys said "the ad was offensive" and someone said that HH basically says the same thing about dwarfs, and people dismissed that? Just because you don't say the exact same words doesn't mean you're not putting the same point across.

I own a robo and she was very skittish but now that she is tame she is the SWEETEST she has never bitten me and will even sleep on me if she has just woken up (she even let me pet her today which she is usually very against haha)

I was looking on craigslist for hamsters that needed homes and I was looking at and add and this is what they put in at the bottom!-

**PS Whether you get a hamster from me or not, do not get a dwarf hamster for a child. Dwarf hamsters ALMOST never make good pets for kids as the Russian and Campbell's dwarf hamsters are territorial of the cage and will bite! Robo dwarf hamsters, the smallest kind, usually do not bite, but are extremely fast and hard to keep a hand on. There are of course exceptions, but that is usually the case. Syrian or "teddy bear" hamsters are the friendliest type of hamsters, which is why I breed this kind.**

If you DON'T believe me look at the add yourself. (Removed) Scroll down to the bottom to see what I mean.

I currently have a Russian named Bunny and she is actually really sweet, but she is territorial sometimes (when she feels threatened by my cats) and she only bites when my brother tries to touch her -_- ( I tell him not to though)

On the topic of not giving a dwarf hamster to a child:  I know four year olds that have a calm enough demeanor to handle small pets, and I know 25 year olds I wouldn't give ANY live animal to.

Whether any particular animal can be handled by any particular human should be qualified by much more than chronology.

On the topic of snake food:  It's human nature to value some souls more than others.  For example, we sell "feeder goldfish" (14 cent comets) by the dozen, but we all still get snarky when we tell someone they can't put a neon tetra in with their Jack Dempsey because it'll get eaten, and they respond with, "so?"

That person needs to be educated! Yes, Syrians are friendly but when I was little I had a much better experience with my Russian than my Syrian.

To be honest, I see people giving out this same advice here on this forum all the time :-/

Just scroll through ANY topic asking "What should I get for my first hamster?", and 90% of the replies recommend a Syrian because "dwarfs are nippy", "Syrians are more friendly", "Syrians are slower", "Syrians are easier to tame", "dwarfs are faster and difficult for a child to hold".... and so on.

I just find it odd that when it's posted on Craigslist it's "offensive", but it's what a whole bunch of our members say all the time!

I don't personally agree with this labelling of the species, but you can't deny that it happens here.

This is true, I have seen this a lot! Personality, personality, personality. My hybrid has never bitten anyone once, while my Syrian is extremely jumpy/nervous and has attempted to bite me a few times. I also want to point out that while his reasons my be off he/she is I think saying that the typical young kid, whose parents aren't going to harp on them to take care of their animal, probably shouldn't own a hamster. Which is true. I have heard a lot of horrible stories of hamster being starved or worse, to death because there 6 year old owners forgot to feed or care for them....

I agree! Most people with dwarf hamsters say "She/he is super friendly and has never bit me once", but everyone seems to think that since they are "known" to bite a lot that all of them do! Same goes with pitbulls! It's the owners fault; not the hamster.

Wow, that's crazy! I have two winter white dwarf sisters right now, and ever since the first day they have never bitten me! NOT ONCE!! And they have never been tamed before!! They're the sweetest little things ever, only 4 weeks old.

In my personal opinion I would much rather have the goldfish over the neon tetra but hey that's just me and goldfish are terrible sources of food for other fish due to certain vitamins Etc.

My first hamster was a Dwarf and she bit me a few times but that was because I needed to learn not to wake her up to be held. She turned out to be the best hamster. She was a bit opinionated but I loved her. She taught me what not to do as a hamster owner. As a parent I chose not to get a Dwarf for my five year old because they are more likely to bite and I didn't want my daughter to get bit and start to fear handling her hammy. With young kids it doesn't usually take much to discourage them so I felt it was the right thing. So to a point yes she's right but not in every case.

I don't think that it's right to stereotype an entire species based on your experience with one hamster. Besides, you even said that the reason the dwarf bit you was because you weren't handling her properly. I don't see how that shows that dwarfs are more prone to biting than syrians?

I think its terrible that people say that sort of stuff, my first Robo, Speedster was an absolute love!! I guess that person just uneducated and in my opinion a bit stereotypical (No offense to the person that made the craigslist ad, but...)
