Hi there.

I have been monitoring local web shops (think of ebay) in Colombia and I noticed somebody is selling hamsters, but only if you buy 100+. They are less than 1USD each.

From the images in the site I think they put 50 in a box and 50 in other and have them sent to you.

My guess is that only people who use the hamsters as food (for other pets) would need that many... Not even pet shops could need that many, I've visited a few and they only have a few hamsters available. I think the demand is not too high.

Is there another possible use for so many hamsters?

Weird.

Unfortunately they're probably being used for food for snakes, etc. I don't think that any reputable breeders / pet shops would buy that many without knowing their backgrounds / genes, etc.

Do you have a link, and do they ship to the UK? One hundred hamsters could be the perfect start to the army I'm amassing for the great Hamster Uprising.

..............azayles.
On that note however, I believe you should be looking more into over a thousand for a whole army. One hundred is more like a small task force.

:-)

I think that by forum rules it's not OK to post the link (because there are phones there). I'll send you a message.

I guess you're joking, but I doubt they can send to another country.

When they ship inside the country they use buses (those that go from city to city) and not normal carriers like Fedex.

My first guess would be to a place where people do not have many hamsters. Let's say there's an Island called Nojoy and they have no hamsters. Fred from Nojoy has always wanted hamsters and so he imports in a large amount of them to start breeding them to populate Nojoy with hamsters.

To be fair, I know of breeders who have this many. Or more. 3x more.

Brookside houses MANY hamsters but they also perpetuate several different lines, breed rare mutations, and discover new mutations. For a proper line of hamsters with one mutation (ie. banded) you need something like 20-25 hamsters to actually make a difference in the type and quality. This is obviously not doable for a small hobbyist breeder like myself (ie. I have 10 hamsters and 3 of them are pet only). But might be more what the ad is based around.

I would guess they are very inbred... If you saw the pictures you would notice they look like two hamsters that have been cloned.

They advertise having both dwarfs and Syrians.

Could you show some pictures? Some hamsters, depending on genotype, can only ever have animals that look exactly the same. :)

Two images I got from the ad. Now I see 3 instead of 2 :-)

Those all looks like dwarfs to me! I *think* they look like WW hybrid morphs? (honestly I'm terrible with WW vs. RCD agouti). And given there are only a handful of WW colours I'm not surprised.

This plucky century of hamsters is just the beginning. I'm also in talks with some French farmers to secure a few dozen black bellied hamsters.
I've said too much already.

I'm assuming they're for laboratory testing?

Oh, that makes sense. I didn't think about that. Perhaps for universities.

And pharmaceutical companies, cosmetic companies, medical research, etc etc.
