I just saw that for the second time in the past year a pet shop near where I grew up was shut down for deplorable conditions. There were over 30 dead animals in the shop, and most of the animals were lacking food and water. More than 200 animals were taken away today when the shop was shut down. Even worse, earlier this year another operation in the SAME BUILDING was shut down and I think it was around 600 animals were rescued.

I know the news isn't exactly hamster related, but there were hamsters in the shop (you see them briefly in the video from the article). It just sickens me that stores like this were operating in the first place. If you guys ever see a shop with conditions like these, please don't support them by making any sort of purchases there.

Edit: I removed the link to the article in case it violated HH rules.

I'm not trying to be a "Mini Mod" at all, I'm just trying to inform you that the forum rules specifically say no shaming with other establish ments and leaving links to the website.

Quote from forum rules:
"3.9) Do not post links to other sites with an intention of "shaming" them. For example, you may come across a person selling hamsters on craiglist or other classifieds sites. Even if you do not agree with the living conditions of the hamster, do not post their contact information here just so that members can send them nasty messages."

Just because it's bad, you should still buy pets from stores like that. You can't just let those poor hamsters suffer in pain from the horrible care. You should want to give them a chance and let them have a good life. What if you were that hamster being taken care of horribly and no one buys you, or gives you another chance because of how the store takes care if their pets.

I didn't post a link to the establishment, I posted a link to the news article I was discussing. I in no way encourage anyone to message the owner of the company that was shut down - the establishment was shut down and nothing would be accomplished by messaging the person anyway. Their contact information, as far as I am aware, was not made available through the article I posted.

As for not buying animals from these locations (in general, not this specific store):

When you buy animals from conditions like these, it encourages the people selling the animals to continue doing what they are doing. They don't care if you approve of their methods or not. For them, your dollar is the bottom line. If people pay them to put animals in terrible conditions and sell them, they will continue to do it. If people refuse to support organizations like this, then less total animals have to suffer as a result of the organization in the first place, and in some cases the organizations may actually go out of business because of lack of support. I cannot support any organization that puts animals in conditions like these. While buying an animal from that location might save that one animal, it will just be shortly replaced by another. I would much rather see organizations like these fail to thrive than constantly "rescue" animals only to have them replaced by another who is forced to suffer the same fate.

It is the same idea as not buying dogs from puppy mills. You might be "saving" the one dog you take from the conditions of the mill, but your purchase would encourage the mill to continue operating. Mills are able to operate because people buy animals from them. If people stop buying their animals, or refuse to buy from them until conditions improve, they would be forced to improve conditions or shut down.

You make a point. I'm quite sorry, for my unmannerly reply to this topic. Please forgive me. I'm wrong on many ways, and I should have honestly kept my thoughts to myself, although if I didn't say that, I would have learned something new. Thank you.

I'm not 100% sure whether the link I posted was against the rules, so I did go ahead and take it down just in case.

Also, I'm not offended at all by what you posted, and if I responded like I was I apologize. It can be so difficult to express tone of voice online, I was just trying to explain myself.

On buying animals from places that keep them in poor conditions, it is just something that breaks my heart. I first learned about animal welfare issues when I was around 12, and it has always been something I'm very sensitive about. I've really looked into the issue from several directions, and I've learned that the single most effective thing I can do when I don't support what an organization is doing is to refuse to reward them with my money. (And, where appropriate, to inform others about what often goes on "behind the scenes," but I don't like to push people away by coming off as a crazy animal lady either.)

Yes, I very much understand what your saying. Animals in those poor conditions breaks my heart also, but that's why I said we should try to rescue the animals, but as you said, if we buy these animals, that it will encourage them to keep doing what they are doing.

As an animal welfare advocate, I am apalled, but not surprised. In the pet trade, stores like this are not all that uncommon. Which is why I will never buy a dog/cat from a pet shop. There are stories all over the web about pet shops such as this one, one gets closed down almost every day, and the poor creatures are brought to shelter that are sometimes already too crowded to take them. Depressing
