Variety – Variety is fairly good at 11 whole ingredients.

Quality – The quality of this food is very good overall.  It contains added probiotics, and does not contain any added sugars, risky preservatives, or artificial dyes.  It also contains some unique ingredients in the form of pineapple, papaya, pumpkin seed, and sweet potato.  Even the pellets contain some unique ingredients such as ground fruits.

Probiotics – Undetermined

Artificial Dyes – No

Oats, barley, millet, canary seed, pea flakes, corn, wheat bran, oats, barley flakes, sunflower seed meal, silver millet, rice, wheat, alfalfa, carrots, chicken meat, red millet, grass seeds, parsnips, dandelion, calcium carbonate, yarrow, plantain, spent grains, sesame, chamomile flowers, linseeds, carrot residues, beets, brewer's yeast, herring meal, animal fat, inulin, marigold flowers, mealworms (0.3%), chicken liver extract, dried, carob, salmon oil, linseed oil, lecithin, rose petals.

Nutrition – Protein is a bit too low at 15.5%. Fat is within the acceptable range at 6.3%. Fiber is a good level at 8.0%.  Because of the lack of protein, this food cannot be fed alone.

Variety – This mix has an excellent variety with 22 unique whole ingredients.  However, it should be noted that 10 of these ingredients come after the mineral additive calcium carbonate, so they are likely found in very small amounts.  The true variety of this food is likely more like 12 whole ingredients.

Quality – This has several sources of animal protein added, which is a unique and positive feature. Similarly, it contains salmon oil, which is a highly beneficial and unique ingredient.  It also has several unique ingredients, including mealworms, rice, parsnips, plantain, linseed, rose petals, chamomile flowers, dandelion, marigold, grass seed, beets, carob, yarrow, sesame, and canary seed.  This food does not contain any artificial dyes, risky preservatives, or added sugars as per the labeling on the package.

7.6% fiber

Unique Ingredients – 16 (parsnips, beetroot, canary seed, apples, rice, dandelion, grass seed, linseed, yarrow, sesame seed, pepper, mealworms, chamomile, rosehip peels, carob, mallow)

Probiotics – Undetermined

Added Sugars – No

Risky Preservatives – No

Artificial Dyes – No

Oats, barley, millet, corn, canary seed, barley flakes, pea flakes, wheat, wheat bran, corn flakes, sunflower seed meal, carrots, oats, rice, silver millet, poultry meat, alfalfa, grass seed, red millet, linseeds, parsnips, calcium carbonate, brewer's grains, carrot pomace, beetroot, brewer's yeast, animal fat, dandelion, yarrow, sesame, herring meal, inulin, peppers, apples, mealworms (0.3%), chamomile, rosehip peels, carob, poultry liver extract, dried, mallow, salmon oil, linseed oil, lecithin. (Grains 54%, 21% seeds).

Nutrition – Protein is a bit low at 15%, but fat is fine at 6%.  Fiber is at a good level at 7.6%.  Because of the lack of protein, this food cannot be fed alone.

Variety – This mix has excellent raw variety at 23 whole ingredients.  That said, several of those ingredients are listed below some pellet additives (calcium carbonate), so the variety may be closer to about 15 whole ingredients, which is still quite good.

Quality – This food contains several types of animal protein, and has unique whole ingredients in the form of canary seed, rice, dandelion, yarrow, apples, beetroot, parsnips, sesame, linseed, grass seed, peppers, mealworms, chamomile, rosehip peels, carob, and mallow.  It contains salmon oil, which is a very unique and beneficial ingredient.  It does contain some filler in the form of corn, which is both high on the ingredients list and split.  This food does not contain any artificial dyes, risky preservatives, or added sugars as per the labeling on the package.

Variety – 8 whole ingredients

Unique Ingredients – 3 (canary seed, mealworms, soy flakes)

Artificial Dyes – No

Canary Seed, Millet, Grass Pellets, Maize, Peas, Toasted Soya Flakes, Toasted Wheat Flakes, Sunflower Seeds, Mealworms (1%), Poultry fat

Nutrition – The nutrition levels of this food are really good overall.  Protein is good at 17.5%, and fat and fiber work well at 6% and 9% respectively.

Variety – The raw variety of this food is 8, which is about average.

Quality – This food contains unique ingredients in the form of canary seed, soy flakes and mealworms.  Canary seed is unique as a first ingredient.  That said, it has been reported that canary seed is not actually present in the food at all.  This food does not, as per the bag, contain any artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives.  It does not appear to contain any added sugars, but due to differing labeling laws, it is hard to know for sure.  However, there is some filler in the form of corn, which is high on the ingredients list.

Burgess Supahamster Hamster Harvest

(thank you Emma&Chester for updated information!)

17% protein

8% fat

6.5% fiber

Variety – 10 whole ingredients

Unique Ingredients – 3 (mealworms, pumpkin seeds, soy flakes)

Probiotics – Undetermined

Added Sugars – Undetermined

Cooked Cereal Biscuits, Toasted Wheat Flakes, Toasted Maize Flakes, Toasted Soya Flakes*, Grass Pellets, Toasted Oat Flakes, Peas, Maize, Pumpkin Seeds, Peanuts, Sunflower Seeds, Banana Flakes, Poultry Fat, Meal Worms, Mono Calcium Phosphate, Contains EEC permitted colorants

Nutrition – The nutrition on this food is a bit mixed.  Protein is decent at 17%.  However, fat is a little high at 8%, and fiber is a bit low at only 6.5%

Variety – This food has a raw variety score of 10, which is decent.  However, it is worth noting that this food has both biscuits and grass pellets listed, and is thus a little bit pellet-heavy.

Quality – This food contains mealworms, soy flakes, and pumpkin seeds, which are unique ingredients.  It does not contain any risky preservatives, as per the manufacturer.  It does not appear to contain any added sugars, but due to labeling laws, it is hard to know for sure.  This food does contain unspecified artificial dyes.  This is a problem, because we cannot know which individual dyes are used, or if any of the more dangerous dyes are included.  There is also filler in the form of corn, which is both high on the ingredients list and split.

Nutrition – The nutrition of this food is not the greatest.  At only 14% protein, it’s low for most hamsters.  The fat content is within acceptable range at 7%.  Fiber is perfectly fine at 9.5%.  Because of its low protein, this food cannot be fed alone.

Variety – The raw variety of this food is 17 whole ingredients, which is a fantastic variety score.  This food’s variety is the main draw of it.  The true variety is great as well—this is a diverse, seedy mix.

Quality – One great aspect of Higgins is that it contains no artificial dyes or risky preservatives.  It does, however, contain added sugar in the form of molasses.  It has added probiotics, and also contains fairly unique ingredients in the form of pineapple, pumpkin seed, apple, papaya, cashew, coconut, and bean.  This food does have some filler in the form of corn, which is very high on the ingredients list.

Mr. Johnson's Supreme Hamster & Gerbil

18% protein

5.5% fat

4.5% fiber

Variety – 11 whole ingredients

Unique Ingredients – 3 (mealworms, beans, locust beans)

Probiotics – Undetermined

Added Sugars – Yes

Risky Preservatives – Undetermined

Artificial Dyes – Possibly

Concentrate nuts (wheatfeed, extracted sunflower, straw, sugar beet, calcium carbonate, molasses, grassmeal, sodium chloride, vegetable oil, vitamin & trace element premix), kibbled maize, flaked maize, flaked peas, flaked beans, whole wheat, wheat extrusions*, sunflower seeds, locust bean extrusionsflaked naked oats, dried carrot, dried bananapeanuts, Verm-X herb blend, Soya oil.

Nutrition – This food has good nutrition overall.  18% protein is good for most hamsters, and fat is appropriate at 5.5%.  However, fiber is rather low at only 4.5%.

Variety – This raw variety of this food is 11 whole ingredients, which is slightly above average. It should be noted that this food also contains mealworms, which are omitted from the ingredients list.  The true variety of this food is good as well.

Quality – On the positive side, it has unique ingredients in the form of mealworms, beans, and locust beans.  This food does not appear to contain any risky preservatives, but due to varying labeling laws, it is hard to tell for sure.  There are colored pieces in this food, but no dyes listed on the ingredients list.  It is unclear at this time what the source of these colors is.  There is some filler in the form of corn (which is split) and straw, which are very high on the ingredients list.  This food also has sugar (in the form of sugar beet) and molasses listed fairly high in the pellets ingredient list.  Verm-X is a powdered supplement that contains garlic and cayenne pepper, so its safety may be questionable (https://www.verm-xusa.com/f-a-q-.html).  However, these ingredients are mixed in with other safe herbs, and are found at the very bottom of the ingredients list, so quantities are probably negligible.  It is recommended to mix this food with another food to further reduce the amount of garlic consumed.

Nutrition – The nutrition of this food is actually pretty questionable.  Protein is low at 14%, fat is abysmally low at only 2.3%, and fiber is too high at 17%.  Because of this, this food cannot be fed alone, and must be mixed with other foods.

Variety – This food has 12 whole ingredients.  The true variety is excellent as well, as this is a very diverse mix.

Quality – The reason this food even makes the suggested list is due to its excellent quality.  The ingredients are very unique (mung beans, lentils, buckwheat, pine nuts, ash berry, chopped hay, bay leaves, potato).  Even the pellets in this food contain rather unique ingredients (dandelion leaf, peppermint, raspberry leaf).  This food does not contain any artificial dyes or risky preservatives and contains probiotics.  However, this mix does have added sugars.  Also, the pellets contain ground corn, which reduces their quality somewhat in spite of the unique leaves.

Artificial Dyes – Possibly

Alfalfa Meal, Flaked Peas, Flaked Maize, Extruded Wheat, Soya Pellets (Produced from genetically modified soya), Maize, Toasted Wheat, Peanut Kernels, Sunflower Seeds, Extruded Maize, Soya Oil

Nutrition – The nutrition for this food isn’t bad.  Protein is at a good level at 17%.  Fat is fine at 6%.  Fiber is a little low, but not terrible at 6%.

Variety – The variety of this food is very poor at only 5 whole ingredients.  Because of the very poor variety, this food cannot be fed alone.

Quality – This food does not appear to contain any sugars or risky preservatives, but due to labeling laws, it is difficult to tell for sure.  The ingredients list does not have any artificial dyes, but the food does contain colored pieces, so the source of the color is unclear.  It also contains a lot of filler in the form of corn, which is very high on the ingredients list and split.  This food also lacks any unique ingredients.

Versele Laga Hamster Nature Complete

17% protein

8.5% fat

7% fiber

Variety – 13 whole ingredients

Unique Ingredients – 5 (beetroot, pineapple, papaya, carob, apricot)

Probiotics – Yes

Added Sugars – Undetermined

Risky Preservatives – Undetermined

Artificial Dyes – Yes

Grains (9% corn flakes, oat flakes, and popcorn), vegetables (18.5% of which 1.5% carrots and 5% beetroot), derivatives of vegetable origin, seeds (11%), fruit (7.5% of which 9.5% apricot, 9.5% pineapple, 12.5% banana, 12.5% papaya, 12.5% raisins and 38% carob.), vegetable protein extracts, nuts (5%), minerals, yeast, FOS, herbs, calendula., vitamins A, E and D3, copper, E320, E321, E102, E132, E110, E124.

Nutrition – Protein isn’t bad at 17%.  Fat is definitely on the high side at 8.5%, and fiber is decent at 7%.

Variety – The variety in this food is difficult to gauge, given the method of ingredient listing.  However, we can safely assume that this food contains at least 13 whole ingredients, and very likely more than that.

Quality – This food contains a very diverse assortment of ingredients, including several unique ingredients like pineapple, beetroot, papaya, carob, and apricot.  It does not appear to contain any added sugars or risky preservatives, but it is difficult to know for sure due to varying labeling laws.  It does, however, contain a large number of artificial dyes.  This food also contains filler in the form of corn, which is very high on the ingredients list.  It should also be noted that the herbs in this food very likely contain garlic, as other foods of this brand do contain garlic as part of the “herb” ingredient.  However, given that it is an herb mix and at the end of the ingredients list, it seems unlikely that the quantity found in the food would be harmful.  Nevertheless, it is probably safer to feed this food mixed with another food to further reduce the amount of garlic being fed.

Nutrition – Protein is low at 14%.  Fat is a little high at 7.5%, and fiber is a bit low at only 6%.  This food cannot be fed alone due to its lack of nutrition.

Variety – The variety in this food is off the charts at 26 whole ingredients, not including the herbs found near the end.

Quality – This food contains a very diverse assortment of ingredients, and has quite a few unique ingredients (rice, tick bean, safflower, linseed, carob, apple, apricot, pumpkin seed, papaya, beetroot, pineapple, cranberry, and elderberry).  Barley is unique as a first ingredient.  It does not appear to contain any added sugars or risky preservatives, but due to varying labeling laws, it’s hard to know for sure.  It does, however, contain a large number of artificial dyes.  This food contains filler in the form of corn, which is very high on the ingredients list and split twice.  It should also be noted that this food does contain garlic. However, given that the garlic is within an herb mix and at the end of the ingredients list, it seems unlikely that the quantity found in the food would be harmful. Nevertheless, it is probably safer to feed this food mixed with another food to further reduce the amount of garlic being fed.

Nutrition – Protein is a little low at only 15%.  Fat is fine at 4%, and fiber is good at 13%.  This food cannot be fed alone due to its lack of protein.

Variety – This mix has quite good variety at 16 whole ingredients.

Quality – This food does not contain any artificial dyes, added sugars, or risky preservatives.  It also has added probiotics, and contains unique ingredients such as apples, trapper peas, soybeans, beans, lentils, and potato.  It has some unique ingredients in the pellets as well, in the form of raspberry leaf, dandelion leaf, and peppermint leaf.  However, the pellets also contain ground corn, which reduces their quality.

Nutrition – Nutrition for this food is iffy.  At 16% protein, it’s a little on the low side.  Fat is low at only 3%.  Fiber, however, is fine at 10%.  Due to lack of nutrition, this food cannot be fed alone.

Variety – This food has 10 whole ingredients, which is slightly above average.  The true variety of this food is decent, although not great.

Quality – This food contains some unique ingredients in the form of carob pods, soybeans, chopped hay, and parsley.  It also does not contain any risky preservatives, and does have added probiotics.  However, this food does contain artificial dyes.  Another point to consider is that this food has a ton of filler.  Corn is very high on the ingredients list.  In addition, the pellets contain ground corn, which is filler.

Lab Blocks / Pellets

Nutrition – The nutrition for this food is pretty much spot-on.  Protein and fat are perfect at 18% and 5%, respectively.  Fiber is low at 5%, however.  Although the protein of these blocks is fine in and of itself, it is not high enough to be a good protein booster.

Quality – This food contains some added sugars.  However, it lacks artificial dyes and risky preservatives.  The base for this food is somewhat unique, as fish meal is a primary ingredient.

Nutrition – The 8604 and 8640 formulas make excellent protein boosters, with 22% protein or more.  And even the 2018 contains adequate protein, though it generally would not be much of a boost.  They are, however, lacking in fiber, at under 5% in all formulas.

Quality – The fish meal in two of the formulas makes for a somewhat unique base.  They all lack artificial dyes and risky preservatives.  Two of them do contain added sugars.  However, these blocks are used in laboratory studies, so they are likely more carefully formulated than the average hamster diet.

Nutrition – The nutrition of this food is fairly good.  Protein is at a good level at 20%, fat is reasonable at 4%, and fiber is pretty good for a pellet at 7%.  This food does have higher protein levels than most typical seed mixes, so it can in some cases be used as a a protein boost.  However, the protein isn't that high at only 20%, so it isn't as effective as many other high-protein lab blocks.

Quality – This food does not contain any risky preservatives.  However, it has been recently changed and now includes multiple artificial dyes.  Peanuts are a fairly unique ingredient in a lab block, though the amount is unclear.  However, it does contain several forms of sugar.

Oat, soybean meal, wheat, brown rice, timothy grass, tall fescue grass, orchard grass, peas, potato meal, dehydrated alfalfa meal, flaxseed, peanuts, canola oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols and rosemary extract), smooth brome grass, minerals, cellulose, lecithin, yeast extract, choline chloride, DL-methionine, dried yeast, L-lysine and vitamins.

Nutrition – The nutrition of this food isn’t bad, but isn’t the best either.  Protein is a little low at 16%, so these pellets cannot be a protein boost.  Fat is reasonable at 4%, and fiber is a tad high at 16%.

Quality – This food has a more unique and diverse base than most other pellets (rice, potato, peas and several types of grass hay).  Not only that, but it does not contain any corn at all, which is a positive point.  It does not contain any added sugars, risky preservatives, or artificial dyes.  It also has added probiotics.

Nutrition – The nutrition of this food is overall pretty good.  Protein is at a good level at 17%, but not really high enough to be a protein boost.  Fat is spot-on at 5%.  Fiber is good at 14%.

Quality – This food does not contain any added sugars, risky preservatives, or artificial dyes.  It also contains some added probiotics.

Mazuri Rat & Mouse

(Note: The hamster and gerbil formulation of Mazuri is discontinued.  The manufacturer has recommended using the Rat & Mouse formula instead.)

Risky Preservatives – No

Artificial Dyes – No

Dehulled soybean meal, ground corn, wheat middlings, ground wheat, soybean oil, cane molasses, ground oats, calcium carbonate, dried beet pulp, dehydrated alfalfa meal, wheat germ, brewers dried yeast, salt, calcium propionate, dicalcium phosphate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, dl-methionine, choline chloride, dried yucca shidigera extract, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of vitamin K), vitamin D3 supplement, vitamin A acetate, folic acid, thiamine mononitrate, d-alpha tocopheryl acetate (form of vitamin E), vitamin B12 supplement, niacin supplement, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin, manganous oxide, zinc oxide, ferrous carbonate, copper sulfate, zinc sulfate, calcium iodate, cobalt carbonate.

Nutrition – The nutrition of this food is generally quite good.  Great as a protein boost at 23%, a reasonable amount of fat at 6%.  Fiber is, however, quite low at only 4.5%.

Quality – This food does have some added sugar in the form of molasses.  This food does not contain artificial dyes.  This food is also zoological grade, which could indicate a more careful formulation.  Although this food is a rat and mouse food, several of the lab blocks on this list advertised for hamsters are actually generalized rodent blocks (Harlan Teklad, Kaytee, Sunseed).  The nutrition and micronutrients of this formula are very similar to that of the hamster formula, so this food should be safe for hamsters as well.

Wheat, Wheatfeed, Soya Bean Meal, Oats, Sunflower Seed Meal, Linseed,  Calcium Carbonate, Vegetable Oil & Fat, Mono Calcium phosphate, Bio Moss ®, Sodium Chloride, Verm-X ® Herb Blend.

Nutrition – Protein is great in and of itself at 19%, though it wouldn’t provide too much of a boost to a low-protein diet.  Fat is spot-on at 5%.  Fiber is a little low at 5%

Quality – This food does not contain any artificial dyes or risky preservatives, as per the labeling on the bag.  This food does not appear to contain any added sugars, but it is difficult to be sure due to varying labeling laws.  This food does not contain any corn, which is a positive point.  This food does contain Verm-X powder, which contains garlic and cayenne pepper.  Because of how low on the ingredients list it is, it’s probably safe.  However, this food should be fed only with another non-garlic-containing food to reduce the amount of garlic being fed.

Sunseed Critter Cubes

(Note: On the bag, this food does specify that it should not be fed as a complete diet, and that it is a supplement only.  However, given that we do not recommend feeding lab blocks as a sole diet anyway, we felt it appropriate to include it on the food list.)

Nutrition - Protein is at a great level at 22%, which makes these blocks excellent for boosting protein.  Fat is good at 5%, but fiber is a little low at 6%.

Quality – The base for these blocks is not unique—it’s a typical soy, wheat, and corn base.  These blocks lack any risky preservatives or artificial dyes.  They do, however, contain some added sugars.

Nutrition – These pellets have a good level of protein at 17%, but not enough to be a protein boost.  They are lacking in fat at only 3%.  Fiber is low at only 3%.

Quality – Quality is average or perhaps a little above—the barley contributes to a somewhat unique base, though they are still mostly wheat.  It does not have any corn, which is a positive point, and also lacks added sugars, artificial dyes, and risky preservatives.

III. LOW-GRADE COMMERCIAL FOODS

The foods on the following list are of lower overall desirability than the ones on the previous list.  This is not to say that they are completely unsuitable.  Several of the diets on this list have a lot of variety, and can be valuable if mixed with the proper high-grade foods to balance out their weaknesses.  However, none of the diets on this list should ever be fed alone, or even as the majority of a mix.

All Living Things Hamster and Gerbil Daily Diet

Variety – 12 whole ingredients

Risky Preservatives – No

Artificial Dyes – Yes

Ground corn, corn, oats, wheat, milo, dehulled soybean meal, sun-cured alfalfa meal, ground wheat, sunflower seeds, shelled peanuts white millet, dehydrated carrots, dried bananas, pumpkin seed, raisins, green split peas, dicalcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, wheat middlings, salt, soy oil, dried cane molasses, ground flax seed, ground peanuts, dextrose, dl-methionine, l-lysine, vitamin A supplement, choline chloride, brewers dried yeast, wheat germ meal, algae meal, fructooligosaccharide, titanium dioxide, ferrous sulfate, riboflavin supplement, vitamin B12 supplement, vitamin E supplement, dried beet pulp, mixed tocopherols (a preservative), yucca schidigera extract, manganous oxide, zinc oxide, niacin, copper sulfate, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of vitamin K activity), rosemary extract, citric acid, cholecalciferol (source of vitamin D3), calcium pantothenate, cholecalciferol (source of vitamin D3) pyridoxine hydrochloride, thiamine mononitrate, folic acid, biotin, calcium iodate, cobalt carbonate, sodium selenite, dried bacillus licheniformis fermentation product, dried bacillus subtilis fermentation product, FD&C red #40, FD&C yellow #5, FD&C blue #1.

Nutrition - Protein is rather low at 13.5%.  Fat and fiber are fine at 4.5% and 10%, respectively.

Variety – This food actually has good raw variety at 12 whole ingredients.  The true variety isn’t great, however.  This food is very pellet- and corn-heavy.

Quality – The overall quality is quite poor.  On the positive side, this food does contain some added probiotics. It also has one unique ingredient in the form of pumpkin seed. However, this food contains a lot of filler.  Not only is loose corn the very first whole ingredient, but the overall first ingredient is ground corn, meaning that the pellets are mostly corn as well. This food has two different added sugars and also contains artificial dyes.

Probiotics – No

Risky Preservatives – No

Artificial Dyes – No

Small dent corn, Alfalfa pellets, Oats, Hard Red Wheat, striped Sunflower, Safflower, White Millet, Red Millet, Milo

Nutrition – Protein is a bit low at 15%.  Fat is reasonable at 4%, but fiber is a tad high at 15.5%

Variety – The variety of this food is average at 7 whole ingredients.

Quality – The quality of this food is a bit questionable.  It does not contain any artificial colors, added sugars, or questionable preservatives.  It contains a unique ingredient in the form of safflower.  This food does contain a lot of filler, as corn is the first ingredient.  However, the main concern is that it does not list any added nutrients.  European brands often do not list added vitamins and minerals, even if they do contain them.  However, this is a Canadian brand, which generally does list added nutrients.  The fact that this food doesn’t list any nutrients implies that it does not contain any, which would make it unsuitable.

Rodent pellets, wheat mix, alfalfa mix, oats, dari, pea chips, carrot pellets, carob, corn chips, sunflower seeds, molasses, wheat, beans, carrot, peeled peanuts, safflower seeds, papaya, mango, rose hips, banana, sugar. Additives: Vitamin mix (Vitamins A, D, E and C), minerals, E330, E320, E321, E324, E172, E131, E124.

Nutrition - Protein is too low at only 13%.  Fat is reasonable at 6%, and fiber is good at 8.5%.

Variety – This mix actually does have a good amount of raw variety at 15 whole ingredients.  However, given that molasses is listed before several of these, the true variety is probably more around 7 whole ingredients.

Quality – The quality of this mix is very questionable.  This food does have good variety, and a few unique ingredients (beans, carob, safflower, papaya, mango, rose hips).  However, molasses is listed above not just some, but most of the whole ingredients!  This can mean one of two things: (1) this mix has extremely high levels of molasses or (2) this mix has very few of the ingredients listed after molasses.  Given that this food also contains sugar and has a lot of fruits in it, this is likely a very sugary mix.  This food does contain artificial colors.

Variety – The raw variety of this food is average at 7 whole ingredients.  The true variety is pretty decent, as this is a seedy mix.

Quality – The quality of this food is not a concern.  This food contains no added sugars, artificial dyes, or risky preservatives and has added probiotics.  Milo is interesting as a first ingredient; however, this food does not contain any unique ingredients.

Nutrition – The nutrition of this food is very questionable.  It’s low in protein at only 14%.  Fat is unbelievably high at a whopping 13%.  Fiber is fine at 10%, however.

Variety – Variety is pretty good at 15 whole ingredients.

Nutrition – The nutrition of this food is pretty poor.  Protein is very low at only 12%.  Fat is fine at 5%, but fiber is low at only 5%.

Variety – Variety is pretty decent at 13 whole ingredients

Quality - The quality of this food is not great.  On the positive side, it does have unique ingredients in the form of papaya, pineapple, and apricot and contains added probiotics. This food does contain some added sugar.  It also has filler in the form of maize (corn), which is very high on the ingredients list. However, most concerning is the fact that this food contains unspecified artificial dyes.  Because the dyes are not named, we cannot rule out the possibility that it contains dangerous dyes.  This food does have orange oil as a preservative as well, which is of questionable safety.

Nutrition – Protein is rather low at only 12.5%.  Fat is a little high at 7.5%, and fiber is good at 8.5%.

Variety – This food has excellent variety at 21 whole ingredients.  The true variety is good as well.

Quality – This food has added probiotics, and also has several unique ingredients in the form of lentils, safflower, papaya, pineapple, sweet potato, pumpkin seeds, Canadian peas, squash seed and pasta.  It does not contain any risky preservatives, but does have added sugars and artificial dyes.  It also contains some filler in the form of corn, which is high on the ingredients list.  This food would be an excellent variety booster, but must be very carefully mixed with a higher-protein diet.  Due to how low protein is, this food is completely unsuitable if not properly supplemented.

Nutrition – The nutrition for this food is decent, and no more.  Protein is reasonable at 17%, but fat is quite low at a mere 3.5%.  Fiber is given as a range, so it’s difficult to say exactly how good the fiber levels are.  However, they are at least reasonable.

Variety – The raw variety of this food is 6 whole ingredients, which is pretty poor to begin with.  The true variety is even worse. Most of the whole ingredients are present in such small quantities in the actual mix that this food is basically a pellet-only diet.  This food cannot be fed alone due to its lack of variety.

Quality – On the positive side, this food does not contain any dyes or risky preservatives.  It also contains a unique ingredient in the form of safflower.  However, most of the variety in this food (by abundance) comes from corn, so there is quite a lot of filler present.  This food does contain added sugars as well.[/spoiler]

Nutrition – Protein is at a good level at 17%.  Fat is low at only 3.5%, and fiber is on-target at 10%.

Variety – This food appears to have good variety based on the number of whole ingredients.  However, it should be noted that nearly all of the whole ingredients are listed after cane molasses, vegetable oil, and the mineral calcium carbonate.  What this means is that these whole ingredients are found in very minuscule quantities.  Functionally speaking, the only whole ingredients found in notable quantities are corn and peas.  This food is mostly pellets, and actually has very poor true variety.

Quality – This food contains quite a few unique ingredients...however, as stated earlier, these ingredients are a very tiny part of the mix, so realistically, they don't count for much at all.   This food lacks risky preservatives and added dyes, and has added probiotics.  Its pellets contain ground corn which is filler.  This food also contains added sugar in the form of cane molasses.

Quality - This food contains a few unique ingredients in the form of carob and papaya. It does have added probiotics, and lacks any risky preservatives.  However, it does contain added sugar and artificial dyes.  This food does contain filler in the form of corn, which is high on the ingredients list.  The pellets in in this food contain a bit of filler, as ground corn is a major ingredient.

Variety – Variety is quite poor at only 5 whole ingredients.

Quality – The quality of this food is fairly poor.  It does contain a unique ingredient in the form of locust beans.  It contains filler in the form of corn and straw, which are both high on the ingredients list.  This food contains no added sugars or risky preservatives, but it does have unspecified dyes.

Nutrition - This food’s protein is a very low at only 12.5%, but the nutrition is otherwise decent with 5.5% fat and 11% fiber.

Variety - Variety for this food is quite good at 15 whole ingredients.

Quality – The major problem with this food is its very low quality.  It does have some good points, as it has unique ingredients in the form of papaya, pumpkin seeds, soybeans, and navy beans.  However, molasses is found prior to several of the whole ingredients, indicating a high level of sugar and/or less variety than what is implied.  There is also a second type of molasses listed shortly after the first.  This food does contain filler in the form of corn, which is both very high on the ingredients list and split.  The pellets also contain ground corn, which is filler.  The dyes in this food are concerning.  Red 3 is considered a risky dye.  Not only that, but the dyes are in the middle of the ingredients list, as opposed to at the end, indicating a very high level of dye.

Quality – This food’s quality is fairly low.  It does not contain any risky preservatives, and does have an added probiotic.  It also two unique ingredients in the form of trapper peas and squash seed. Having milo as the first ingredient is unique itself.  This food does contain added sugar.  It also contains artificial dyes, which are found around the middle of the ingredients list (as opposed to at the end).  This could indicate unusually high levels of dye.  This food does contain filler in the form of corn, which is both very high on the ingredients list and split.  The pellets in this food contain ground corn, which is filler.

Nutrition - The protein content of this mix is very low at only 12%.  Fat and fiber are fine at 5.5% and 8.5%, respectively.

Variety – This food actually has quite a bit of raw variety at 17 whole ingredients.  True variety isn’t terrible, though this mix does appear to be slightly pellet-heavy.

Quality - The reason this food is considered low-grade is that it has several very pressing quality issues.  On the positive side, it does contain some unique ingredients in the form of navy beans, trapper peas, papaya, safflower seeds, pumpkin seeds and almonds.  However, this food does contain a lot of filler.  Corn is not only the first ingredient, but is split as well.  This food’s pellets contain ground corn, which is filler.  There are two types of molasses listed prior to several whole ingredients, indicating either a high level of molasses or less variety than what the ingredients list implies.  Artificial dyes are an issue in this food.  First, this food does contain Red #3, which is considered a risky dye.  Also, the dyes are listed in the middle of the ingredients list instead of at the end, indicating higher levels.

Nutrition – Protein is a little low at 16%.  Fat is reasonable at 7%, and fiber is fine at 7%.

Variety – Variety is average with 8 whole ingredients.

Quality – The quality of this food is quite poor.  On the positive side, it contains unique ingredients in the form of locust beans, flaked soya and pumpkin seeds.  It does contain added sugars.  This food has colored pellets in it, but the source of the colors is unclear.  This food does contain filler in the form of corn, which is not only very high on the ingredients list, but split as well.  This food does not appear to contain any risky preservatives, but it is difficult to tell for sure due to varying labeling laws.

Nutrition – Nutrition isn’t the greatest.  This is one of the few lab blocks that cannot be used as a protein boost, due to it only being 15% protein.  Fat is perfectly reasonable at 4.5%.  However, it does have good fiber content.

Quality – The quality of this food isn't bad - is primarily hay-based, and lacks any corn or other fillers. It contains no artificial dyes, added sugars, or risky preservatives.  It does contain probiotics in the form of yeast.  However, the overall reason that it is considered low-grade is that it simply cannot serve as a staple in a hamster's diet.  It would need to be heavily supplemented by both a high-protein block food (due to its lack of protein) and a seed mix (due to its lack of variety).  In essence, it becomes functionally useless.

Variety – The raw variety of this food is 11 whole ingredients, which is fairly good.  The true variety of this food is not the greatest—it’s pretty pellet-heavy.

Quality – This food is rather low in quality.  On the plus side, it has added probiotics and has unique ingredients in the form of papaya, pumpkin seeds, and safflower.  However, it contains cane molasses listed before several whole ingredients, which indicates a high level of sugar and/or a lower variety than what is implied.  It also has another sugar (sucrose) later on in the list.  This food does have filler in the form of corn, which is why on the ingredients list.  This food also contains Red 3, which is considered to be a more dangerous dye.  In addition, this food contains BHA, which is a questionable preservative.

Variety – The raw variety of this food is average, at 9 whole ingredients.

Quality – This food does contain added probiotics, and has a unique ingredient in the form of Niger seed.  This food contains filler in the form of corn, which is not only high on the ingredient list, but split as well.  This food’s pellets contain ground corn which is filler.  It also contains added sugars, but it’s worth noting that they are very low in the ingredients list, so are not really a problem.  This food does contain unspecified dyes, which are concerning because we have no way of knowing if any risky dyes are used.

Variety – This food actually has decent raw variety at 12 whole ingredients.  The true variety is excellent as well, as this is a very seedy mix.

Quality – Despite its nutritional problems, the quality of this food is fairly good.  It does not contain any added sugars, artificial dyes, or risky preservatives.  It also contains several unique ingredients in the form of red beans, buckwheat, safflower, and pumpkin.  It contains added probiotics as well.  If not for the extremely high fat, this would be a very promising mix.  The only issue is that it does contain filler in the form of corn, which is very high on the ingredients list.

Nutrition - The protein for this mix is a little low at 15%, but the larger concern is the high fat content at 10%.  Fiber is okay at 7%.

Variety - This food has very good raw variety at 15 whole ingredients.  True variety is questionable, due to the occurrence of salt before several whole ingredients on the list.

Quality – Quality for this food is fairly good—it contains a number of unique ingredients in the form of buckwheat, rice, safflower, pumpkin seeds, linseed and carob.  However, as stated above, salt is listed above several of the whole ingredients.  This could indicate either a very high level of salt or a low level of those ingredients.  This food does contain artificial dyes, though it does not have any added sugars or risky preservatives.  In fact, if not for its high fat, this would be a solid mix.

Unsuitable Due to Extremely Poor or Unknown Quality

There are some hamster foods that are not "dangerous" per se, but are so unhealthy that there is no point in feeding them in any amount.  These are generally foods that have poor nutrition, little to no variety, and below-average to extremely poor quality.  Adding these foods would only make a diet worse, not better.  This subcategory also includes foods for which we do not have enough information.

8 in 1 Wild Harvest Daily Blend Nutrient Rich Food (Hamster and Gerbil)

12% protein

4% fat

10% fiber

Dehydrated alfalfa meal, white millet, corn, sunflower seed, wheat, milo, kibbled wheat, kibbled corn, flaked wheat, flaked corn, ground oats, soybean hulls, wheat middlings, soybean meal, dicalcium phosphate, salt, ground limestone, Vitamin A acetate, Vitamin D3 supplement, choline chloride, Vitamin E supplement, niacin, riboflavin, pyridoxine hydrochloride, thiamine mononitrate, D-calcium, pantothenate, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (Vitamin K activity), folic acid, biotin, Vitamin B12 supplement, magnesium oxide, ferrous carbonate, ferrous sulfate, zinc oxide, manganous oxide, copper oxide, calcium iodate, cobalt carbonate, red 40, yellow 5, yellow 6, blue 1.

This food is not dangerous, but is not worth feeding due to its low quality.  Its protein content is extremely low at only 12%.  It also offers very little variety at only 5 whole ingredients, and has a lot of corn (split 3 times on the ingredient list!).  It contains artificial dyes as well.

Country Wide Hamster Supreme Raspberry / Hedgerow Raspberry Food

Raspberry flavouring, Papaya, Banana, Micronised cooked Barley, Whole wheat, whole Oats, Flaked Peas, Flaked Maize, Whole Maize, Locust Beans, Sunflower Seeds, Extruded Wheat Discs, Peanuts, Pellets, Permitted EEC Colourants.

VITAMIN A 6,950iu/kg, VITAMIN D3 1,000iu/kg, VITAMIN E 24iu/kg Selenium Sodium Selenite 6.2mg/kg, Copper Cupric Sulphate 13mg/kg

This food is not dangerous, but is so overall poor quality that it should not be fed.  Protein is far too low, fat is a bit high, and fiber is low.  The very first ingredient is a flavoring, and several ingredients after that are fruits.  It does have somewhat decent variety at 10 whole ingredients, but this does not outweigh the negatives.

Cunipic Hamster Complete

10.75% protein

5.44% fat

7% fiber

Wheat, barley, carob, olive oil, peas, corn chips, extruded corn, peanuts, raisins, seed and sorghum

This food is not dangerous, but is unsuitable due to extremely poor quality.  It is abysmally low in protein at only 10.75%.  And although it is difficult to tell due to labeling laws, its variety does not appear to be much above average.

FM Brown's Natural Hamster Food with Vitamins and Minerals

11.25% protein

4.25% fat

5.3% - 7.3% fiber

Corn, alfalfa meal dehydrated, timothy hay, milo, millet, wheat flour by-product less than 9.5% fibre, oats, wheat bran, split green peas, stripe sunflower seed, wheat germ ground, soybean flour by-product, vitamin A palmitate, cholecalciferol (source of vitamin D3), vitamin E supplement, vitamin B12 supplement, calcium carbonate, dicalcium phosphate, salt, manganese proteinate, iron proteinate, copper proteinate, cobalt proteinate, calcium proteinate and zinc proteinate.

This food is not dangerous, but it does so poorly in all 3 criteria that it’s simply not worth feeding.  It is extremely low in protein, and somewhat low in fiber as well.  It has very little variety at only 6 whole ingredients.  The quality of this food is not great—corn is the first ingredient, and none of the other ingredients are unique.  Overall, this food would provide no benefit to a hamster, even if mixed with other foods.

This food is not dangerous, but it is so low-quality that there’s no real reason to feed it.  Its protein level is very low at only 12%.  It has fairly little variety at only 6 whole ingredients, and the ingredients in it are not unique.

This food is not dangerous, but is so poor overall that there’s no point in feeding it. The nutrition of this food is pretty awful.  Protein is incredibly low at only 10%.  It has very little variety at only around 5 whole ingredients (the “grain products” include corn, wheat, and oats).  The quality of this food is below average, as this food has no unique ingredients.

This food’s nutrition isn’t great, as protein is lacking at only 12%.  Variety is average at 7 whole ingredients.  The quality of this food is fairly poor.  Corn is split and listed twice near the very top of the ingredients list.  This food also contains added sugars and unspecified artificial dyes.

This food does not contain dangerous ingredients, but is so terrible in quality that it should never be fed.  This diet is absolutely loaded with sugar.  It contains 2 types of molasses, honey, and corn sugar…on top of several fruits.  Several of these ingredients are listed above whole ingredients, making the variety poorer than it appears to be.  In addition, this food is extraordinarily pellet-heavy, further reducing the variety.  And the pellets themselves are low-quality, as they contain both ground corn and oat hulls, which are filler.

Wheat middlings, soybean hulls, dehydrated alfalfa meal, whole corn, whole wheat, red milo, cane molasses, dehulled soybean meal, flaxseed meal, corn flakes, oat groats, ground corn, salt, lignin sulfonate, black oil sunflower seeds, ground limestone, choline chloride, DL-methionine, soybean oil, rolled oats, vitamin E supplement, sodium selenite, ferrous sulfate, magnesium oxide, niacin supplement, vitamin B12 supplement, manganese sulfate, calcium pantothenate, zinc oxide, thiamine mononitrate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, copper sulfate, biotin, vitamin A acetate, cobalt carbonate, zinc sulfate, riboflavin supplement, ethylenediamine dihydroiodide, menadione sodium bisulfite complex, calcium propionate (a preservative), color added (yellow #5), blue #1, yellow #6 lake, titanium dioxide, red #40), vitamin D3 supplement, folic acid.

This food makes the unsuitable list not because of dangerous ingredients, but by just how poor it is overall.  The protein content is abysmally low at only 11%. Variety is pretty bad at only 5 whole ingredients.  Furthermore, this food has molasses listed extremely high in the ingredients list (above several of the whole ingredients).  It also has a good number of artificial dyes.

This food is not dangerous, but is so poor that there's no point in feeding it.  Interestingly, the quality of this food is not an issue, as it's actually quite good (no added sugars, artificial dyes, risky preservatives and contains probiotics).  The issue here is the combination of lack of protein (only 12%) and very little in the way of variety at only 6 whole ingredients (one of which is corn).  Despite its decent quality, this food simply would not bring much to the table, even when mixed with another food.  It also contains filler in the form of corn, and the pellets contain ground corn.

This food does not contain dangerous ingredients, but is so poor overall that there is no point in feeding it.  Protein is severely lacking at only 12%.  Variety is on the low side of average at only 6 ingredients.  There’s also a lot of filler in the form of corn.  Given the extremely poor protein level and lack of other redeeming qualities, there’s really no reason to feed this food.

This food is not dangerous, but is so low in overall quality that there is no point in feeding it.  It lacks protein at only 12%.  It contains very few whole ingredients (only 5), all of which are very common.  It has a ton of filler in the form of corn (split 3 times on the ingredients list).  It also contains added sugars and artificial dyes.  The pellets also contain ground corn, which is filler.

Very interesting and informational  I was intrigued by the amount of pros and cons each food had.. I guess no food is the "perfect" food. Thank you to you, CH, and everyone else who contributed for making such helpful threads!

I-N-C-R-E-D-I-B-L-E, Tax! ;D There's just so much info, and the analysis is so detailed!

If I may have somethings to day about some foods.

Burgess dwarf hamster harvest listed Canary seeds as the primary ingredients, yet I've never had any bag with an actual canary seeds (3 bags I've purchased from Viovet up to this date). It is quite confusing and I've asked this in the forum a long time ago, but I've got no answer. At some point I emailed the Burgess company, and they came back to me asking for a sample food, along with batch number and expiry date. Unfortunately, I was unable to send them, because I lived very far away from the address. I did give them the batch number and expiry date, but I haven't heard back from them.

I wanted to know if anyone else's bags are like this too. I doubt it was merely bad bags for me, because I've went through 3 bags with different batch numbers. If the others noticed this as well, I wonder if it's possible to get a fellow HHers who lived in UK to ask the company about this and send a sample to them.

Other guess I have is it's probably in the pellet, yet the Burgess syrian version does not have Canary seeds listed although they have the same thin, long grass pellets. It just brought me to question the accuracy of the Guaranteed analysis now that one first ingredient is missing.

The other is Mr. Johnson Hamster and Gerbil Mix, it has colourants. I emailed them as well about this and they claimed it to be EC Permitted Colourants. They didn't list this, but the pieces are definitely colored so I asked them a while ago.

I'm sorry I didn't tell this earlier! I felt bad to say this after you've compiled the list and analysis :worried:

This is a great list, thank you for all this information!

Though I do have one question about the Kaytee Healthy Support Diet for Rat, Mouse, and Hamster (Forti-Diet Pro-Health) blocks.

On the ingredients list, at the end of the third line from the bottom, citric acid is listed. Is that still considered a bad ingredient for hamsters? Or does it not matter because it's so far down the list?

Don't feel bad! That is EXACTLY the sort of information we want to know. The more input we have from people who have actually seen and used some of these foods, the better analysis we can give and the more comprehensive the list can be. Contributions from forum members on stuff like that, along with info on foods we don't yet have listed etc is actually enormously helpful

I would just like to update you, Tax, that the "new" Harry Hamster food is a mix up. There is no 14% protein mix. I contacted Supreme Pet Foods this morning and the receptionist, Julie, said:

"Hi, thank you for your e-mail. Our packaging is currently being updated, however there is no Harry Hamster mix with 14% protein, are you able to send a picture of the packaging or product to which you are referring to?"

Thought i'd clear that up. :)

Interesting!  Do you happen to remember / know the expiration date of the bag?  (I only ask because this is one I did check in person multiple times, and always saw 16% protein)
