HELP ME!!!!!!! My little African dwarf is floating at the top, and he appears dead, but he moves every few minutes. I put him and my other froggie in an old breeder tank I used for my molly/guppy fry (don't worry, I washed it) and put some food in...I am worried my betta was eating all of the frog food, and my frogs weren't getting any! :( I tried to open his jaw to get some food in, but he wiggles back to the water! Any advice at all would be great!!!
I'm afraid he will be joining Froggie Heaven soon! :(

Well actually, I didn't put them in an entirely different tank...you can buy these breeder tanks to stick pregnant livebearers in, they have their babies in it and you take the mommy out so the fry can grow in there. It floats in the main tank, and it has these slits to let circulaton through...I did research, and bettas can live with African dwarfs, as long as the betta doesn't peck at the frog, my betta is a 1 year old girl, she couldn't care less about the frogs, but she eats all their food!
Do I go buy some type of medicine, or what?
He made it through the night, but he's barely hanging on. ![]()

Wait, so you put the frogs in the breeder box to feed them in there so the Betta wouldnt get the food? I am not sure what the problem is, the food could of accumulated fast and caused a lot of ammonia in that area or they got really stressed out.

I've owned African Dwarfs for years now, I don't anymore, but I've learned some things over the years. The food you are giving him, what kind is it? Did you try frozen bloodworms? They are edible for both betas and frogs, and they are usually available at your local petstore. I've used those for YEARS and never had any problems, in fact, they LOVED them.
I used to keep packs of the bubble packages in my freezer and every day, I would take out a Dixie cup, put warm water in the cup, then pop one of the bubbles and the bloodworms would come out. Then once they are thawed, I would dump them into the water and the frogs would go nuts for them. ![]()
I think it's worth a try, and you probably don't want the frog eating the fish food and the fish eating the frog food, so why not find a compromise?

I keep the frogs + Katniss, my female betta, in a 10 gal. freshwater tank. I can find bloodworms at Petco and probably at Walmart...My betta loved it! I checked my frog and he's a tiny bit better...the frogs don't touch the betta's food, she eats it before the frogs get to it! I give the frogs Wardley Brand Tropical Fish Flake Food, what I give my mollies + guppies. Should I try some sort of medicine for my frog...?

I wouldnt try any medicine as you do not know what the cause of the behavior was. Medications can stress fish out if its not needed. I always have and always will add a tbp of rock sea salt for aquariums every tank cleaning though, it helps prevent parasites and can heal wounds to any fish.
I have been researching the fast few hours on these frogs and it seems they can starve without the proper food as the fish will eat their food. You shouldnt give flakes - but brine shrimp, or soak pellets and give it to them in their area through a turkey baster. They are a lot of work.

Is your frog floating right-side up with his legs sprawled out? If so, this is completely normal. Frogs will do this when they're comforatable. I used to breed and raise ADFs, and I can tell you from experience that keeping them with bettas is not good. The frogs often get so scared that they try to hide constantly, and it can cause so much stress that it threatens their lifespan. Not to mention they have completely different diets, and fish will steal frog food.
That being said, ADFs should not EVER have fish flakes. They can gulp a lot of air and get bloat this way. The best food you can give them is live guppy fry (lucky you!) and a mixture of frozen (not freeze-dried) bloodworms and brineshrimp. Remember, frogs are obligate carnivores. I suggest keeping them with the livebearers for the fry, but provide TONS of hiding places and plants. Also, when you feed them the frozen cubes, they should sink, so make sure to put them into your frogs' hiding places and watch them eat. ADFs kept with fish often starve. If you don't want to do all of this, just get them a large, shallow tank of their own- twenty longs seem to do the trick, and Petco is currently hosting a dollar per gallon sale.

First of all, NanaLove, your Syrian hamster stole my name!
Second of all, I cannot put them with my mollies and guppies because mollies need brackish water, and so do the fidler crabs I have with them (don't worry, they don't bother each other.) Third of all, I feel so bad and cry when the fry are gulped up by the adults (the adults eat their own children...its barbaric
) My frogs have been provided with lots of hideouts, but Katniss, my betta, couldn't care less about the frogs, she just steals their food! Besides, my sick froggie passed away
and I want to keep it from happening to my other frog. Fourth of all, my parents won't even let me have a 20 gal.for Poptart, so I doubt they'd let me get a 20 gal. for the frogs, and they've already put their foot down, no more fish tanks! :( I could possibly try the frozen bloodworms, although I don't know where to find them...we have a Petco and another local pet store, but the nearest Petsmart is 5 hours away :( I think the local one sells live/frozen feeders... I'll get back to you.

Live feeders are even better, but I'm never able to find them. You can purchase frozen bloodworms and brineshrimp at Petco in the freezer section for a few dollars a pack, and they last a long time. I would buy a package of each just to provide more variety.
Why can't you keep the frogs in the breeder tank? Even if your betta doesn't "go after" your frogs, she steals their food. ADFs are very, very timid, and your betta's size alone could terrify them. Not to mention they have different name requirements.
That's funny what you said about Sage, because I found his name in a baby book.

My sick frog died, and I already explained what the breeder is, so yeah, I am probably going to keep my remaining frog in the breeder. What's even funnier is that I am a girl...and Sage, your hamster is a boy...!

How big is said "breeder"? ADFs need at least 2.5 gallons each, but floorspace is more important than volume.

Its OK. :.(

I estimate it is around 5 in. in length and 3 in. in width. I will probably get frozen or freeze dried bloodworms and brine shrimp to feed both Katniss and Sugar Baby, my remaining frog. What will happen most likely is that I'll keep S. B. in it until she learns to find her food when I drop it in there. Then I'll let her loose with Katniss. ![]()
