There are those very little small ants crawling along the
cage bars. I cleaned the cage recently but they are always
around. :yuck:

Could be the fact that I give boiled rice to my
hammies and yoghurt drops.

How to chase those tiny ants away ?
I dun think they can bite my hams thru those thick fur but it is better to get rid of ants. :fight:

I suggest u clean the cage again... and next time place your hams in a tub and feed them the rice and other fresh food... once they are full, place your hams back into their cage... This way, u will be sure there's no leftover (esp. fresh food cos it will turn bad if left too long) in their cage and also cutting down the chances for the ants to invade your hams cage... If possible, place your hams cage at another location... Sometimes is becos your cage is "obstructing" their(ants) path to their nest or something... :cheeky:

Ants are good "biter" if they feel threatened or for some other reasons... Do check if there's any bite marks on your hams...

Hope it will solve your problem... Good Luck!

I find ants a nuisance too. I used to have them around some of my hammies cages. Its because of the dog biscuit n the apple that I used to give them. Once I stopped, they stopped appearing.

lixzzz is right, you cn feed fresh food seperately so there r noi leftovers for the ants to pick. You could try applying ant oil/repellent around the area of the cage or where you would normally see the ants. Don't apply it if you let your hammmies roam your house cause they might accidentally lick it. ::) :faint:

zen::i'm including a link to methods of totally natural ant repellents (such as cinammon, etc.) i would use these methods vs. any store-bought ant insecticides because, even though these are being sprinkled outside your hamster's house, if the ants ingest the poison, then continue to climb into your hamster's house and die there, your hamster may eat the poisoned ants.

this works but u need to do it frequently .. draw a chalk mark about the cage or table on which the cage stands .

However chalk isnt easy to find in my area so I resort to baygon . BUt i remove the cage and replace it only after a number of hours has passed Or I use a glove .. spray baygonon tht einger and wipe it about the table legs .

mei

typos I mean spray baygon on that gloved finger and rub it over the table leg

Clean your hamster cage & change its beddings once every 3 to 4 days....use an anti-flea/mites spray to spray thru the area around your cage everytime u clean their cage....for me,i use the anti-fleas/mites spray to clean the cage itself & bone-dry it later with toilet paper before putting the new beddings back to the cage again....gradually u won't see any more ants....i use to have a ham with diabetes & his urine would attract lots of ants....so far my method had work well for my diabetic hamsters,BaoBao.....hope it'll work well for u too....

here's a link to a post i made referring you to natural ant repellents~~ i think this is the safest way to go, you don't want poisoned ants dying in your hamster's house and then he eats them~

MissPixy is 100% correct. You do not want your hammie eating poisoned ants!

Also, I have found that the chalk method really does work.....MG saw it on some kid program and told me about it. Just use regular chalk....just like the blackboard or sidewalk kind.....and draw a circle around the cage wherever it is sitting. They will not cross the line. The chalk is also usually easily removed later on so you don't have to worry about it too much.

i don't know if there's an ants' nest near my hamster's cage, but EVERYTIME i clean out the cage, no matter how throughly, and put fresh food in, there will be a couple of ants hoping to snag some food off.

i'm currently feeding my hamster a mix of 3 different types of food. brown's fruit banquet, sluis superior menu and er..... i can't remember what's the 3rd one called, but it's a super premium mix. i'm quite sure ALL of them are attracting ants.

does anyone have any suggestions for ant repellent?

ok..... the suggestion of using ground cinnamon seems the safest bet, and the cheapest too.

do i need to lay out many of them around the cage?

usually we don't recommend using poison for ants because they might die around the cages and the hamster might pick them up to eat.

i read about other natural repellents such as tomato leaves and cinnamon although i have not tried them myself.

ok, i've tried placing cinnamon sticks around the food bowl in my hamster's cage, but the ants still keep on coming!

so i'm guessing i should try using powder or something?
