1. Hey Talitha, tell us more about what it’s like to be a Steppe Lemming.
Talitha Lemming

Well, we’re a special kind of animal I believe, over the rainbow bridge I have met all kinds of pet rodents and none of them are quite like me and my family. We’ve still kept all our wild instincts and haven’t become the lazy potatoes they call hamsters. One day those silly little creatures are all going to get eaten if they aren’t careful! That’s one of the good things about us Lemmings – we know the true intentions of those humans. You have to be careful and hide when they are walking around your home too closely; you never know when the sneaky creatures are going to attack you! That’s one of the reasons it’s important to have your family around you, we all look out for each other and when I was a little girl I never left my mother’s side. Learning to live alone was very difficult, we’re supposed to live together and are much more social than the pairs of hamsters I’ve met. We can eat a lot of food – hay especially is delicious, my preference is Timothy hay, I remember in my last week on Earth I was spoiled for choice with 8 kinds to choose from! One of the biggest delights of a Lemming’s life however is having plenty of space to burrow down in. You can spend as much time as you like safely hanging out underground digging around, chewing and eating with no threat of being eaten, this is something most other pets seem to have forgotten about. Clearly we Lemmings are just so much smarter.

2. How’s life on the other side of the rainbow bridge?
Talitha Lemming Ooh, you should see it up here, it’s beautiful! Wild land for as far as the eye can see for all the lost rodents to live in. My whole family are here with me too and they’re all healthy so I can go looking for food with my mum and she doesn’t have to suffer anymore! I like exploring and often I come across roaming hamsters. All they ever want to talk about is how great their owners were, as if that’s what life was about! How boring. I’m glad I was always more independent. I mean sure, owners can be useful sometimes – but there are more fun things to do than have them fussing over you!

3. What is your fondest memory?
Talitha Lemming Well, I loved my family very much, especially mum, but I can’t say I have any fond memories with them because life was so hard back then – we were all so weak from not being able to find anything to eat except carrots. I try to block out most of my memories from that time. I suppose one of my best memories was going out and seeing the whole world! I bet not many pets get to do this. I got taken out in a box with bedding to hide in but a clear window at the front which I starred out of at everything passing by. One man came right up to my box and starred back at me! He had a really interesting face, it appears that people can come in different colours! Who would have guessed, they’re such plain looking animals.

4. What do you think of your owner?
Talitha Lemming Well, it’s difficult to say. One of the bad things about being a rodent is that anything that’s too far away from you just looks like a blurry object. Whenever there were people walking around my cage I wouldn’t know which ones they were so I would always hide. But when she took me out, I would know it was her and could relax – I don’t think she wanted to eat me, to be honest I think she was just very stupid – everyone knows that us small rodents are delicious food for every other kind of animal! I remember when I became very depressed about my mother’s death she was there keeping me warm and snuggled instead, it felt like mum was still with me so I managed to pull through. So I suppose my owner wasn’t all that bad, I just think I would have been fine without her anyway – I was very good at foraging for hidden food around my home so who needs humans!

5. Do you think you have become an important ambassador for ‘Steppe Lemming Awareness’?
Talitha Lemming I hadn’t ever thought of that, but maybe you’re right! My owner was always saying I was a special little creature and she was lucky to have me. I haven’t met many other Lemmings up here in pet heaven, so maybe people don’t know enough about us. Now that I am clearly an internet star maybe people will learn more about our species. My old home was no fun at all, no proper food, no bedding to dig in. I think my old owners didn’t even know what kind of animal we were so maybe now that people have read my story other Lemmings can live happier lives.
